What is the optimal rim width

I spoke with a maxxis rep on MTBR , he said their 2.3 tires were designed around a 23mm id rim.
I'm very happy with my wtb frequncy rims i23 and the 2.3's ..

Depends on what tire you run.

Schwalbe 2.35 feel awesome on 30mm iw rims, only "pretty good" on 23mm iw.

They are much higher volume than a maxxis 2.3

It also depends on preference.
Some side to side tire rolling isn't too bad, might even be good in some occasions, as long as it doesn't lead to burping.

Perusing the Nox site got me thinking if one was going "plus" but wasn't intending to run anything bigger than 2.8 if a 29mm id would degrade performance much or if an 36mm id would maximize tyre diameter that much more.

2ndly I 'm wondering how much more circumference I'd get with a 2.35 Hans Dampf if I moved up from 23mm id to 29mm id.

While we're at it anyone want to speculate how much taller 2.8 Rekon/Ikon's are than 2.35 HD on proportionally sized rim widths?

Word is: Schwalbe is coming out with a 2.6" Nobby Nic soon.

Outer diameter is almost equal between different rim widths.

Even actual tire width doesn't change much at the widest point.

But the inner widths are felt very much while riding. Especially at lower pressure.

I'd go so far that Plus size tires without Procore are shit. Because you'll collect punctures with the lightish tires. And feel like a fat bike crawler with the heavy duty ones.

With (special plus size) procore there will be some big benefits to reap though, in a couple of product generations.

I don't disagree with what he said, but take what those guys say with a grain of salt.

I spent some time on Nobl TR38's this spring. The change from riding 23mm internal rims wasn't as drastic as I thought it would be. I could see the benefit of riding a wide rim, as you can run low psi without the chance of burping. Otherwise if you can ride one size well, you can ride the other size equally as well.

I'm finding the current 27mm internal Nobl's to be a happy medium. There are no surprises with tires folding over in corners, but they also don't drastically change the tire's shape.

My 2.8s I run on 29mm internal rims 27.5 wheels. The side knobs are quite minimal as is, a wider rim would only make that worse. But that likely comes down more to my budget wtb Trailblazers.

I also have 2.35 Hans Dampfs on 21mm internal rims on my 29 wheels, no issues with those and no $$ to experiment and try different widths unless I need to replace.

I am definitely a fan of a rim width around the 30mm mark and 2.35" tires like a Magic Mary. I am also running a 29mm I-w rim with a 2.5" DHF that feels solid to me too at 19 psi. It's all about the support when cornering for me and not feeling that squirm as the tires rolls. The bike feels really surefooted.

Ermagerd. My rims' internal widths are only 21mm. Is that why I suck at teh riding?
