For my 29ers: 32T front, 11-42T cassette rear.

26er: 36T front, 11-42T rear.

Going to the Chilcotins for the first time next month. Is it worth buying a ludicrously small ring that I might not use following that? 28T or even 26T with a regular X1 cassette in the back on 27.5 wheels.

the stock setup on a 29'er is a Shimano 1x11, rear cog set is a 11-46 with a 30T chain ring

I think it was ok on the test rides in PeeG at Otway but here in Smithers I needed some help going up the bluff

So I changed the front ring to a 28T absolute black and now I definatley suck less

I can't really feel the oval rings not like when I tried bio-pace back in the day

You could look at OneUp's switch system - then you could conceivably carry a few different sizes and whack on a 28 in the car park if you were going to need it that day...
