Why pick one or the other?

how much better is a top end bike today than my 3 year old 26 inch wheeled carbon Nomad thats worth 2g I mean in actual ride performance.

C'mon. Everyone knows its all about the bike, and nothing to do with the rider.

I've seen plenty of dudes ride ten year old motos with nothing other than new tires occasionally and nothing else. It can be done but where's the fun in that? ;)

im not a track guy but my 2013 KTM250 XCW is pretty much fine out of the box. My trials tire on the rear gets two years before it needs to be changed. I can assure you its pretty fun.
Not hating on blowing cash on fun toys like great mountain bikes but it seems like you are not getting much extra for your money. I have snowmobile which is even a more overpriced sport so im not one to talk.

Life is good if you have enough cash to piss it away on fun stuff like toys

regular maintenance is the same on any bike though, my (old, I guess) bike goes through about the same maintenance schedule..but I'll admit the new schwag out there is pretty killer.

have you checked out how much a Sram 11spd cassette runs compared to a 10 spd SLX or XT though? Even the entry level 11spd stuff is 4-5 times the price, maybe more…is the tradeoff worth it? You can't put a price on the fun of riding a bike..until you realize you actually can.

Good lord I'm dreading replacing my 11 speed cassette for the first time. Hopefully a cheaper option available when I need to. I'm sure they'll be a 12 speed ultra narrow system to go with 28.35" wheels by then and 11 speed will be on clearance!

I priced out xt 11 speed on crc and to get a shifter, chain, RD and cassette it was $350 OR one sram cassette lol. Just replace it all with shimano and be done with it. I'm sure you could find a freehub body cheap enough.

Makes it tempting to just run the whole system in to the ground and replace it! :dead:

I did a full 11 speed XTR conversion for about $550. Not too bad.

Ordered my first new - not just new to me - bike in 20 years this year.

I've always had such great luck following around my buddies and purchasing their hand-me-downs as they got the latest and greatest. But, this year I thought I would splurge.

US - http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/trance.advanced.27.5.1/22205/84042/ - $5,000 USD
Can- http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-ca/bikes/model/trance.advanced.27.5.1/24696/89684/ -$4,999 CAN.

However, as I ordered it this year I was able to get the this year price (or maybe I just got a bro deal 'cause I am such bro and my enduro skills are unmatched) - $4,700 CAN dollars.

I think it is a lot for a bike - but I am old and cheap.

That seems like it will be a nice bike. Hope you enjoy it! On a related note, what is up with their geometry chart? Reach and stack given in cm's and everything else in inches?

Those are sweet. Great spec for a very fair (relatively speaking!) price. Enjoy!

yup, Shimano is the clear winner here but the bike I'm lusting after comes with the sram X1 system…and proprietary XD freehub body. For the pain in the ass involved in switching to shimano (or back to a 2x10 system, because I happen to think that 1x11 is a compromise in gearing) it's enough to steer me towards another manufacturer

Don't even get on a bike unless it has and 11-speed cluster, at a minumum. Not worth riding, IMHO. If you ride with an 11-speed drive train and somehow "find an extra gear", is that considered cheating and earn you a DQ?

That's good value. Yes, $4,700 is a lot of money for a bicycle, but at least you are getting the new Fox 34 damper/kashima, new Fox air can kashima shock and full XT on a carbon frame. Compare that with the entry level 2016 Devinci Troy build for $4,500 that has an RS Sektor fork, Debonair RT shock, crap wheels, 2x Deore/X5 drive train and M396 brakes… Unbelievable. Glad to see Giant is still offering good value as Devinci has fallen off the planet this year for $CAD builds.
