Bikes take up room. Try holding your bike up against the wall, in 3 different places, and see how much space it will take. Or hold your bike up in a hanging position. You'll find that the amount of room is a fair bit because of tire size or handlebar width.
You can buy those hangers for about $10 at a hardware store (I bought one at the Rona in North Van). You need to use a couple long scews into the stud to hold the weight. If you have steel studded walls, it's not so good.
Or you can buy hooks J hooks at a hardware store (or Canadian Tire) and hang your bikes from the ceiling.
