So am I right thinking I can get away with a narrower width rim if a 2.6 tire isn't designated "wide track"?

Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

How narrow?  The problem with wide tires on narrow rims is that you need higher pressures to keep the tire from rolling sideways which completely defeats the purpose of wide tires.

Yeah I get that. There's a raging debate over on mtbr where some claim 35mm the minimum whereas others say 30mm just fine I like the weight of a locally offered 27mm so 3mm big diff?

A 2.6 on a 27 will be fine I think.

2.5 WT Maxxis DHF only comes in MaxxGrip which is shame for the rear.  I guess you gotta sell more tires.

Anyone know where a can get minions 29x2.5 WT, because 2.4 mountain king is a little bit to narrow for 35mm rims?

There's a chart here showing approved rim widths for WTB tyres: https://gzmyu4ma9b-flywheel.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/WTB-tire-width-to-rim-width-recommendation-chart.gif

I guess you could extend this to other similar sized tyres...

Yea, they're pretty easy to find online. Heres a 2.5 WT 3C EXO TR

The WT, for maxxis at least, claims that the tire is optimized for 35mm internal rims. Cam wrote up something about this a while ago, and I recall seeing that Maxxis displayed the WT tires on 26mm internal rims. Head scratcher. I think you'll be fine.

Even though Maxxis advertises the WT line as optimized for 35mm, the 2.4 DHR2 on a 29mm internal setup is still right where a 2.3 DHR2 is (in terms of shoulder knob angle, and ease of getting onto them in flat turns).

I'll take the extra volume from the wider sizes on offer, but they're fine on 30mm rims.  I'm waiting on the 2.4 MinionSS, a tire for which I really hope they run them on 35mm or wider rims, because dragging cornering knobs has been my primary wear mechanism on the 2.3 variant.
