hey guys, Lately I have had to tighten my chris king headset so much, I strip the bolt just by taking it off. Why do I have to tighten the headset so much so there is no play. If i do not tighten the headset this much, there is play. What do i do? thanks

I do, I just dont get it, I have a sherman slider. The whole bike is a piece if you ask me, I mean, I love her but she does not treat me very well. Maybe I should have bought a banshee scream or something. :(

i don't think it's the head set, i think it's the top crown. when you tighten the middle clamp on mine the metal touches and the bolt cant tighten any more. check yours. you may need to file it or something. did not do it yet, but i think this may work.

i had the same problem with my steelset. turns out it was the stem. I repaced it and haven't tigtened it since. Try another stem and see if that helps.

Bbike… when loosening/tightening your headset always start from the bottom and work up….

as in loosen the uppercrown/ then the steerer clamp bolt/ then teh stem bolts, adn lastly the starnut….

when u get teh proper tension work your way back down…. this way u dont cause any stress on any one single part….

hope that helps…

p.s. make sure your steerer tube isnt bottoming out on your headset top cap… that would cause exactly the problem u are having….:(

Make sure there is a few milimeters or room between the top of the steerer and the top of your stem. If they are flush or real close, the preload washer might be hitting the top of the steere before you get the headset preloaded properly. You may have to run a small spacer above your stem to get it to clear.

PS:IFO, good call on the pattern for properly tightening things, bottom up and so on!!
