A 888 is a double crown fork. (so is a 40, a boxxer, a emerald or a dorado)
The triple clamp comes from the top crown having three "clamps". The lower crown typically has 2 "clamps. Clamps meaning that the crown has a slit with pinch bolts to clamp on to a separate part of the fork. Top crown has one clamp for each stanchion and one clamp for the steerer and the lower crown has one clamp for each stanchion and none for the steerer since it is press fit or Cryo-fit.
