Hello NSMB

I have a 2016 Kona Private Jake with a PF30. If you are familiar with this model year you know the BB are f#cked beyond the normal PF30 issues, so I am looking to do a T47 conversion. I am looking for first hand accounts and knowledge anyone has with T47 conversions. Anyone know a shop that does them? La Bicicletta? Mighty Riders? Bike Room?

Im not sure who can thread a BB shell for you as its a pretty specialized request.  Do you mean a PF30 bottom bracket?  I am aware of BB30 and PF30, I havent heard of a BF30.  What are the issues with the shell on the bike?  Is a threaded PF30 a possible solution or is it worse than that?

Good luck finding a shop that has T47 threading tools.

Thinking about it, I'll bet you $25 you could call 150 shops across western Canada and not a single one of them will have T47 threading tools.

You'll be lucky if you can find a custom builder that has them.

Buy one of the thread together bb's and use bearing retainer compound on the shell/bb interface.

Good catch. PF30 is correct. Not sure how I typed "BF30" don't let the bike industry see this as they may come out with "BF30" as a new standard. LoL.

Already running a thread together (second one) and it still creaks like crazy. As this is my Cyclocross, stationary Zwift bike, old school XC trail bike. It goes through BB pretty fast with all the mud so I am hesitant to use retaining compound.

Ah yeah that does suck. The thread together with some retaining compound would be my best shot at trying to cure those creaks. T-47 conversion is a good idea if you can find somewhere that can do it. Id have to wonder a bit about the integrity of the BB shell once you put threads in it. It obviously wasn't originally designed to have threads, and you would be removing a fair bit of material from the ends of the shell. If seen some PF shells that are quite thin and would wonder if they could tolerate being threaded.

Id try Dream Cycle on Commercial, they deal with a lot of different bikes. Maybe try somewhere south of the border if you are close enough? Might be some shops in Bellingham (Fanatik?) or Seattle.  At ~$750 for the set of taps, I cant see most shops carrying them for the one or two times they might get used.

This is another solution I am looking at. But l fear it will be hard to remove when it needs to be replaced.

With these options, can't you just leave the cups in and replace just the bearings when time comes?

Have you talked to any framebuilders?

That was my first question. If you're using a thread together from wheels, why take the cups out at all? Change the bearings.

Use the retaining compound. Use the primer as per the instructions before applying the compound, that's what it's for.

Compound the whizz out of it and just change the bearings.

I have a PF30 with wheels mfg thread together and that sucker is rock solid.

Why didn't this standard catch on? It seems like a better extension of the standard BSA threaded BB than all the pressed standards that followed Instead.

The cynic in my says that you just answered your own question.

Also threads.  The "industry" doesn't seem to like having to do precise threading if they don't have to.
