I'm looking to get some direct mount cranks. I like the new Turbine Cinchs and the XX1s. Pricing is pretty close though the carbon is quite a bit lighter. My current alloy cranks have taken a brutal beating - so many nasty pedal strikes and are still going strong. There are quite a few photos of broken SRAM carbon cranks but that's not exactly conclusive but I would be a bit leery of carbon cranks that looked like my alloys do.
I could put those RaceFace boots on the XX1s - but how tough are they? Are they just rubber that will shred the first time I ding them?
Anyone put a lot of abuse on their SRAM carbon cranks - have you had good luck? Any breakages? How do you feel about them when they're all worn and gnarled up?
At the end of the day I'm 220lbs so an extra 100g of crank weight isn't much, especially if it means they'll survive a beating. Or is carbon in this application just awesome and I'm over-thinking this?
