Those surly singulators any good? Want to convert an old hardtail into single speed. It's not in half bad shape (for an urban beater) but the drivetrain is fubar so I think a cheap and easy ss conversion would be appropriate.

DMR? Surly? Others?

Wrong. Always.

Taking the derailleur off and shortening the chain will never work.

The magic gear is attainable, but very elusive.

i had a surly kit for the back, worked well, you could adjust your chainline with it. and for tension, i just used a blackspire stinger or equivalent i had lying around…thought they looked better than the tensioners on the back. tried a chain half-link, but no go

Yess tensioner works well for this.

Mine has 4 years of commuting, with zero issues or maintenance.

Wait 'til winter and ride your bike after the roads have been salted. The shifting - both front and back - will seize up. Costs nothing, and works like a charm. Don't forget to rinse off your chain, and your brakes unless you want to ride brakeless.
