So last night mid-way through my ride I noticed that the plastic part of my compression knob had gone missing on my Shiver. Everything important is still there (I think), just the black oval looking plastic thingy.
Does this matter at all? Should I stop riding it until I get a replacement (I doubt it, but I'd hate to damage the fork). And how much do these cost to replace?

It is not plastic, it is aluminum. It is the pre-load adjusment dial, and you are ok to run it w/o it, as long as the C-Clip that sits under it is firmly installed.
The C-Clip holds the cartridge in place. If it comes off, the cartridge rod will fall inside the fork and will be crushed on compression.
If it stays up w/o the c-clip, your fork can seperate, and you will die. You MUST have both C-Clips in place. Lose one, and the fork is held together on only one side…loose both and it is sure death. :)
You can use any marzocchi pre-load dial to replace it. Be warned, they are pricey.
