Hey man, I'm assuming it's a 4 door 89 Jetta. If that is so the only roof rack that will mount to that car that won't be liable to fall off on the sea to sky is a yakima Q-Tower system

Yakima Q tower, with Q-clips #32 both front and rear.

You can probably find the whole Yakima System on craigslist for cheap, then you'll just have to buy the right q-clips for the car. Head down to Rack Attack for that. $40 a box (you need 2 boxes). 10% discount with a bro card.

then any bike racks will work. Thule Side arms, or yakima Highrollers are the pimp shiznit, but whatever you can find that will fit your bike works.

Other then that there is no reccomended way to carry 2 bikes on that car

call the boys at rack attack if you have any questions, Craigslist is your goto place, if you have no luck we've got it all in store.

I'm using a Thule version of the same rack (Q Tower) and it's been great with 2 bikes on numerous Whistler trips (92 VW Golf). It looks identical to the Yakima. I found the Thule used for a reasonable price

According to te Thule fit guide, there is no fit for that year VW. Only yakima. So Q-Towers is your way

If you go online, Thule recommends a rack that fits….

I found my rack used for $100. It's a pretty common rack thet's been around for a long time, so getting it used shouldn't be an issue. I also found the Yakima King Cobra for $175 used as well….

Thule's rack that fits is a 305 specialty rack. The odds of finding one used are very slim, as it's a rare rack. You could find one to buy new, but you'll have a much easier time finding a q-tower system used. But most importantly you can use that same Q-Tower system on the next car you buy, the 305 will go with the car. Brand new Yakima, with brand new bike racks for 2 bikes will be close to a grand. Get it all used for half that (hopefully). Either way if you do buy new, it's all lifetime warrenty. It will go from car to car, bike to bike. I'm a advocate for doing it right the first time. It's better to buy a norco shore to ride for 5 years then a CCM at canadian tire for 1/10 the price that lasts you 3 rides.

^Not that rare. A quick search of craigslist brought up 2 Thule racks from late 80's /early 90's VW's. I agree new is nice, but sometimes used is just as good and doesn't break the bank…
