Recycling tires?

Actually all tire stores are required to accept used car and truck tires for recycling for free. I learned that last year when I had four trashed snow tires to get rid of. Perhaps bike tires are the same and any tire store will take them.

was that your Larsen in there? The tread was hardly worn so I dug it out from the bottom only to discover a big sidewall gash

I took a bunch of tyres to MEC t'other day and mentioned I'd heard "somewhere" they could recycle them. The guy said, "Sure, I'll stick 'em in the garbage for you."

Well, Don't say I didn't try Miss Nature.

To be fair, I think he was pretty surprised I considered the tyres worn out as, like many on here I suspect, I'm a little more particular of tyre condition than your average seawall rider. He may have taken them home for his own use.

I emailed the city who told me the following:

I phoned MEC and they did confirm that they do recycle bike tires and dispose of them properly.

For the Victoria area folks: Wild ARC, the wildlife rehab place in Metchosen, takes road and mountain bike tires and uses them for nests/habitat.

Dunno about MEC, but I noticed the other day that Cove has a massive stack outside the shop, so maybe they are accepting them.

After riding in Churn Creek (a long time ago) with friends, I took our multi-time flatted tires to the N Van "Co-op" to dispose into the pile by the door, and immediately a guy/customer began picking through them for the ones that still looked good on the outside. I told him they are full of cactus thorns and you will need hundreds of patches to make them work, and even with tubeless sealant they will look rabid. He said he will just cut his patches into 4 and make them work.

Now when I have a tire that has been ridden in cactus country, I take tin snips and cut through the beads to save some fool their time and glue or sealant.
