Rad old bikes thread

The new new is great and all, but what I really like are the old bikes. They way they evolve, the solutions people come up with to make them last and work better, the ways they get re-purposed...

Figure we could use a thread devoted to 'em, and as I finally took some pics of my chrome aluminum Norco I can finally start.

Lets see your cool old bikes - mountain, road, whatever!

Here's my '85ish Norco Yukon, aluminum, shiny, XT 735 swapped over from a Bianchi Super Grizzly, retro motocross style chrome bars, fancy low-knob tires, MacRide, fancy Brooks.

I saw a dude on a 80's mountain bike causing around Ottawa years ago and have wanted one ever since. I've been bashing this guy around hauling kids for the past couple years and finally decided to give myself a little treat for surviving 2020/2021 and style it up right. It's almost "done".  Just want different grips, rear hub, Hite-Rite, pedals…

Thanks man!

My Alan Jones memorial bike, the Apollo Alan Sport, should be along in the next couple days, but I want to see what other folks have!

Well this  not super old nor is it steel goodness but it rocks old school geo 71/73 (or maybe 72/74 with the suspension corrected kona p2 fork.)  Shifter has stopped working and I find it's nice just leaving it in 38x17.  Will probably throw my singlespeed conversion kit back on it and the 16 tooth cog.  Really fun rip around town bike or ride with kids bike.  Gravelkings, brooks b17,  Soma Dream Bars, 40mm stem, Avid BB7s.  It's quite light and a fun handling bike, the 780mm dream bars and short stem seem to help with that.  My cheap thrown together answer to atb/gravel/city bike.

Incredibly cool bike! Best thing that can happen to kids.

My dad rode me around on a similar Longus on a top tube mounted child seat. That got me hooked on mtbs…

That look pretty sweet - upright, tough, comfy, fast rolling

I’d say 26” mtbs are basically “old” at this point and I’m curious how they’re going to be repurposed going forward.

Your style bike plus an electric assist would be pretty amazing around town for instance.

The evolution of my oldest bike. I got the frame for cheap and built it up with mostly used parts.

First a single speed drop bar with a ridiculously long stem adaptor.

Then a flat bar geared 1in threaded fork townie

Now townie with Carver 1in threadless fork and Surly 8 pack rack (although it no longer has the rear rack and has a rear fender for pulling a kid trailer and it has some touring moped bars). Build is 1991 Schwinn High Plains, Carver 1in fork, IRD headset, Mavic wheels, Maxxis DTH, XT V-brakes with Avid levers, Old Deore cranks sanded down with USAComponents chain ring and Paul chain retention device, XT 8 speed rear derauiller with e-bay goatlink, Sunrace 11-40 cassette, Ultegra bar end with Paul thumbie mount, Velo Orange Mojave cage, On One cage, S&M metal pedals, old school Turbo saddle, Surly 8 pack rack, Soma rear fender.

Next Crust Clydesdale cargo fork and dynamo front wheel.

Yeahhhh, that guy is developing some flavour! I love big wide bars on these old low and steep bikes.  studio_rook on instagram does some pretty rad refreshes on 80's/90's short and steep mtb's with wide risers and BMX stems that look like a LOT of fun.

Looks like Craw and I were twinning it back in the day!! This was a 2006 RFX with a 2005 6-Pack Horst link rear.

The derailleur roller things were called Roll-a-ma-jigs. Still have a few sitting in my parts box :) Ill have to see if I can dig up a full build pic with the Boxxer I had on it!

Still riding my Carbon RFX as my main bike until I get my Druid all finished up.

If the purpose of this thread is to showcase how the old have evolved into something new, I should include my commuter for the past 20ish years.

94' Moots YBB that was factory anodized. Bit of a frankenstein of parts to build it up, and it has evolved over the years. Pace Carbon/Ti fork, White Industries Eno hub, chainring and cranks. Magura HS-33 rear brake (which is now gone), Avid Juicy 7 front and Time ATAC WC pedals! I still get asked about it about once a week on the bike route :)
