Nothing beats the Angry Bees of my Chris King hubs! I had a shimano LX level hub back in the day that was dead silent. I still run it on my beach cruiser.
quality quiet rear hub?
love the idea of the Stealth, but the cost is out of the question. haven't even seen one in person. seems to be pointing towards the Shimano options. are they really that bad on engagement though, some seem to complain a lot about it. i like high engagement as much as the next guy but want the next rear hub to be as quiet as possible. compromises…. i'm quite happy hollerin' as far as trail noise goes…

ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.
One close call with a bear will set you straight, if they don't hear you coming trouble is aloof!! Loud is your ticket out of someones meal ticket. Hope/King/Industry9 will earn you respect on the trails.

or a hiker, or (as happened to us this weekend) horse packers. bikes are getting wicked silent, which is nice, but not really a good thing when it comes to sharing the trails with other users

DT 440's on the DH bike. Fairly quiet, tend to get a bit louder once they need a little love.

King hubs will likely attract bears with their angry bee sound.

reminds you to pedal and quit coasting?
Translated : Reminds you that your Smilla-like "sense of flow" leaves something to be desired.

Me too… the sound keeps the grizzlies in my area from munching on my carcass…
Used to run a hope SS with a 2x6 9sp setup.
daydreaming hikers in the middle of the trail were never an issue again.
Put the carrier on the lathe and now I can run 8 10speed gears.

not really sure it's worth it, to be honest.
Onyx hubs, which are currently only for Bmx, are the best hubs i have ever ridden. They are similar
to true precision stealth hubs and are totally silent with instant engagement.
They have been testing a Mtb hub so stay tuned. Unfortunately it will be expensive but wow, what quality.
