Pump Protection?

The last pump I had clipped to my frame died a horrible death from grit ingress into it.

A new pump is now clipped to the side of the downtube via the bottle cage and I've already had to cover the head on a cut off piece of inner tube because Blackburn offer a swappable schrader-Presta head but the stupid cover doesn't fit into the Presta version.

But I've also got to stop grit getting into the rest of the pump mechanism - cover the rest in inner tube? Looks horrible, but would work.

Put the pump in my bumbag ? It's long and weird and I don't fancy falling onto it which is why I frame mounted it.

This pump is quite cheap but how are people protecting their spendy OneUp EDC pumps? Cover it in gorilla tape where the gaps appear - that would also double as a convenient source of gorilla tape...

the edc is quite well sealed. no need for any additional protection in my experience (so far). regular rides in gross weather, gets the hose all the time, etc.

exactly. i use that phrase all the time on my kids when applying sunscreen. not having seen the movie, they have no idea what i'm going on about, but it warrants a chuckle (and repeat use) every time.

I recommend a condom for your pump protection.

It spreads the lotion on its skin.

Second this. Edc pump on the frame x 3 years. 365 day a year riding. Still works like new. Their seals are 👌

I used to make a pump condom out a tube and fully intended to for my EDC. Haven’t gotten around to it and every time I go to use it it’s mint. Lives on the down tube in a spot thats killed unprotected pumps in the past.

Pump condom is super easy:

- pick tube of the right diameter. You’ll want it snug but not so tight you can’t slip in and out (!)

- cut a section a few inches longer than the pump

- zap strap an end shut

- flip inside out

- trim the open end so it leaves a little flap, or just leave it long enough to fold over. Use something to secure the flap, I like a tiny strong rubber band like you get on produce or a little Velcro strap

- strap that shit wherever you want!

I made a pump condom and this pump was like new after a whole winter of splashing from the front wheel. I had access to a bag sealer at the time which was handy, but that's not essential.

I have this piece of equipment with straps and zippers that I wear on my back. It used to be all the rage back in the day.  I put my pump in there. I think it was called a backpack :)

Somebody had to say it....

I have two relatively cheap SKS pumps which I had strapped to the frame for many years without any protection. Still working fine. Mud, snow, dust, hose, whatever.

Haha. This actually made me go and look if there is a difference between them. Not surprisingly, there is an entire article on it.

I will stand by my statement that it is a 'backpack' that I carry :)
