What do you  people use for protective eyewear? I’ve been lucky to only have a couple rocks near the eyeball when wearing contacts.

I’d like to keep it under 100 bucks if possible.

I have two pairs of Tifosi sunglasses and love them. They're inexpensive but don't feel cheap and I won't be heartbroken when I lose them or break them.

MEC usually has something wraparound with a clear lens option. I've been using a few pairs for years.

If style isn't a factor, go to Home Depot and grab some safety glasses.

I bought a pair of Coast Optics sunglasses with the photochromic lens. They cost less than just the lens for my Oakley and are local so it was an easy decision. They work very well.

Rx rayban wayfarers are usually pretty bomb proof but I cracked  a frame, fortunatley I had other Raybans so I just swapped the lenses and didnt need to get a whole new pair of glasses

Do you guys find a specific lens colour works well in those conditions where tree shadows are messing with your reading of the terrain?  I use clear lenses most of the time but sometimes I think there's got to be a better way to deal with shadows and bright light making things look weird.  Hopefully I'm not alone on this haha.

maybe you're happy with non-prescription since you're a contacts wearer, but i  opportunistically took a punt on a pair of Julbo Rush with the prescription lenses (not a separate clip).  they have knockoff/their variant on ChromaPop, perform great for me, a lifelong glasses wearer. not in your price range but there are very few options for prescription with high coverage. from anything other than whispering radius the prescription cutouts aren't noticeable, they are really slick and the optics are crystal clear.  clear quickly enough if you get a little steamed as well.

Yeah coast optics is what the cool kids buy these days. I've heard good things, they're local-ish, and have an assortment of lenses.

I have some Shimano Technium 2's, about 2 years old and like them. I have  clear, gravel, and photochromic lenses (the photochromic is actually from the Technium L but they fit with a little bit of Dremel work). They around the same price as coast optics, that $140 mark seems to be a sweet spot where you can get good quality without going completely insane on price.

If I lost them tomorrow I'd be torn between re-buying or trying coast.

For mixed lighting, in and out of trees and shadows, the photochromic has been damned good. On actually dreary days it defaults to a little too much tint, so they don't totally replace the need for a clear lense, but nearly so.

I use clears or photo chromatics most of the time, and have given up on "nice" glasses for mountain biking - I want to be able to jam them in a pocket, and not worry if winter grit scratches them. Luckily, one of the things that the internet is destroying is the lock that expensive sunglasses had on the decent sunglasses market.

I've been super happy with these for photo chromatics, which I like in the summer mountain biking, and all year for road riding. ROCKBROS photo chromatics

I also like to check out safety glasses because good ones have excellent clarity and impact protection, and the certifications to back it up while being cheap cheap. These Milwaukee's fit well, don't fog, and don't jump out as safeties at first glance. Milwaukee Safeties. I recommend KMS Tools if you want to explore this route - they have lots of styles, you can try them on and their prices are usually the best. Decent work gloves for Bikin there as well if you want to keep the working class vibe going. I like these, but usually just get whatever bike glove is on sale. Work gloves for bikin'

ULine Safety Glasses - Less than $4 a pair (free for me - Thanks Work). I find they're great, and if I lose them, no problem, I've got more.

I’m not much of an activist consumer, but I’ve sworn off ULINE, as much as I absolutely love cleaning, organizing, office, and retailing supplies.

Those people absolutely suck.

The cheap cheap UVEX at KMS are almost identical. Their owners are probably trash as well, but ignorance is bliss.

Coast Optics. I use the rose lenses a lot of the time but do crack out the photochromic from time to time as well. Pricing is very reasonable as well compared to the big players

Solid new-ish local company with great products and values, doing the sustainable/recyclable thing as much as they can which is a good move.

The new version of the googles are rad too. Bike park is full of them these days
