no one uses hockey tape anymore? man, i am old

actually if one was wanting to save weight, the hockey tape does work, but the life span is short.

It's so hard to clean up when you replace it though.

The crappy thing about tape or tubing, is unless the whole length is clued it is possible for it to come unrapped a catch in the cogset and derailluer. While this has never happened to me, I have heard of it happening. $200+ bill for the person it did happen to.

I use a single zip tie at the end of my wrap to hold it together. 1.5 years and it still looks good.

Soft side of Velcro like some have said but then I rub shoe goo into it. It's like you dipped your chainstay in rubber.

Or…. upgrade to 10 speed with an internal clutch rear D and ride off into the sunset laughing because your bike is silent now. :-)

I just use old tubes. They usually last for about 2 years and do a decent job of keeping the noise down.

old tube and zip ties. Or, for added ghetto radness., an old tyre (preferably one with a non-agressive tread) and zip ties.

Used to use the tube zipties, but found that cleaning the chainstay with a little alcohol or degreaser, then putting the velcro on works better. You can cut it to fit as well so it gives a nice clean look.

Being cheap is OK. Being a clueless sanctimonious condescending douchebag is just Vlad's MO.

we use this at the shop

Hmm interesting. Haven't seen that before. Is this stuff a nightmare to get off when you need to replace it? Is it any worse than the industrial velcro for instance?

Inner tubes FTW. Especially when one works in a shop and there is always a massive pile of them awaiting recycling. If you started wrapping really tightly then you only need to tape the final end so it still looks pretty neat, yet easy to remove.

no, it just uses same adhesive tape on one side like velcro

I've been doing this…but after seeing the Gwin slideshow I think I'll give the super awesome Gwinning world cup 3M mastic tape a try. If it works for him it's gotta make me faster right?

ask your local dealer if they have any left over chainstay protectors?

many complete boxed bikes come with them, and often with spares, or a customer will want a Lizard Skin neoprene protector on their build, and the workshop won't use the supplied part

I am riding a carbon fibre specialized frame, but have some very nifty "Whyte Bikes" chainstay protectors on the top and bottom of my driveside chainstay

these are a thick cloth / plastic coated material with a strong adhesive and have removed any chain noise whilst protecting the C.F. stay from chain slap

I did have to black out the "Whyte Bikes" logos with a sharpie though ;)
