There is no residential address associated with bikes you register. Just an email. If it gets 'hacked' they will have a bunch of pictures of bikes and serial numbers with no way of knowing where they are.

I did look into my profile on the site, I had nothing entered, but there is a spot where you can put your address in.
I don't think it ever asked me though, so I imagine most profiles don't have this info.
Whew! That is good to know. I don't see any reason then why someone would not register their bike. Even the forks have an easily recorded serial number.

How is this any better than just keeping this info yourself? You are transferring the info to someone else, what happens if they go out of business? or a server crashes and their backups fail? Do they even back up the data?

I casually know the Project 529 folks through trail building and advocacy with Evergreen Mtb Alliance in Seattle. They are very experienced tech folks with impressive resumes from places like Microsoft. Just based on my dealings with them on advocacy stuff, I'd have total trust in their processes.

I do like how easy it is to lookup the status on a serial number.
I hope they also have a bridge to the RCMP stolen bike registry so that one-search spins the results from both wheels.

Cool to see the RCMP pumping Project 529. Now if only we would see more aggressive bait bike programs in the Sea to Sky (or maybe things are happening in secret for obvious reasons).
I noticed a "Bait Bike In Area" sign posted around W23rd and Mahon this weekend.
Cops attended to a fellow that may have stolen a bike.
Clearly not his bike -- nice bike and looked more-or-less homeless.
They stopped him, asked some questions, checked the serial #.
Came clean - no thefts registered against it.
Guy rode away.
Into the wind.
Register your bikes serial #!
