OneUp EDC Tool

Just got the early access email about the EDC tool.  Total cost is ~$155CDN.  That includes the tool ($77), the top cap kit ($32.50) and the tap kit ($45).  Yes, you have to thread the inside of the top of your steerer to make this work.  Seems like alot of money for a multitool and tire levers.  Anyone think they would run one of these?

Haha. Nope.

Crank Bros has a BB tool.  No CO2 cartridge.

Considered it. I'm gonna run fix-it sticks for now. Cheap and reliable, but no pump/CO2 options.

I really like the idea but that's a lot of jake for a mini tool. And I have a number of decent mini tools already. Plus I measured the id of my Pike and I don't think the EDC will fit. In reality, the only time a really easily accessible tool is needed is when I am setting up new bars or levers or saddles and need to fiddle on the trail. Other than that the tool is in my pack or under the seat in a small tool kit with a tube and CO2. The packs hold pumps. Today was a pack day because I needed my Sven Saw to take out some winter deadfall.

Nope. It is pretty easy to stick stuff in your pockets and tape is also way cheaper.

It's a really cool idea ("where are my tools? here they are!"), and for enduro racing (without a pack) it looks great - and as an engineer, tapping a thread in the top of a steerer isn't too much of an issue.

I won't be running one though - I like my spine protection, so run a backpack (with a protector in) all the time - so as cool as it is, I'll just cram my pack full of tools etc instead.

Wow, you have to actually tap the inside of your steerer tube??   As a rider who prefers a bottle cage and no pack, this tool was looking promising to me, even at its premium price.  The tapping thing is a major turn off for me though.

Heck, I use Hope Head Doctors in all of my forks in order to avoid score marks from star fangled nuts.

It's only the inside of an alloy steerer - it shouldn't weaken it any considerable amount, and it's much less of a faff than you probably think - a local shop should be fine with it.

Even in the case you stop using the tool and go back to a standard star nut, it won't stop you - if anything it'll give you something better to grip on.

I'm not sure you can use it with a carbon steerer though.

I don't think so. I usually wrap a tube around my tools and Voile strap them to my frame. I think I'll stick with that.

I feel like I would consider purchasing one of these if I didn't have to buy the tap kit. $100 CAD for tools is pretty pricey, but could be worth it depending on the convenience and clever form factor... I suppose  a shop wouldn't let you just borrow the tool for free either, so you would probably be looking at $25 instal anyways. I think I'll stick to my fanny pack.

Not really, seems way to expensive for what you get. Plus, I don't mind riding with a pack.

I wonder why they didn't design it to have a plug/sleeve that the tool could thread/magnet attach to, one that secures to a washer/bolt assembly on the bottom of the steerrer tube like a BMX headset. Tighten headset with sleeve, drop in tool. No threading. I'm sure everything will be fine but I don't mess around with front end structural parts I sure ain't the only one so threading my fork is out.

I like these tools but none of them are any better than the good ol seat bag.

Myself and 3 of my co-workers have these on order. We are getting one tap kit between the 3 of us. I will report back with what I think of it.

Probably because it wouldn't be so secure, and also would add more parts/weight (and decrease the space they had to actually put the tools in).

Also, anybody thought of using this with a Barstow ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1878404005/barstow-system-and-mini-bar-bike-tools-from-minera ) or Tool Ninja ( http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/topeak-chain-tool-ninja-c-f-handlebars-11-spd/rp-prod157666?gs=1&;utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Chain+Reaction-UK-PLA-PLA-All-DT-SE-Shopping+QLB+Generic+Desktop&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mkwid|sObRFCQha_dc|pcrid|161850070953|pkw||pmt||prd|576990UK ) to get a chain tool in there too?
