Reposting my comment on Mike F's Stanley Pourover review -

"While I've got almost the coffee snobs gathered in one place can I get opinions on a good affordable hand grinder. I've never had a grinder before but am keen to try one."

I've done a little research and seems like the Timemore C2 or C3 is a reasonable entry level grinder.  The Comandante C4 looks great but is  bit pricy.  I'm using a Ilsa stovetop espresso pot.

The Hario ceramic slim grinders are cheap, easily adjusted and work great.

Critically, the grind arm is attached via a hex keyed head so you can use an electric drill to grind when you’re in a hurry or whatever.

Some of the others use silly attachment methods that feel flimsy and won’t take a drill head.

The Hario is also a transparent grounds canister so you can see how much coffee you have ground.

I have a 9bar stove top espresso maker I use primarily for travel now. Makes amazing coffee but there’s very little you can do to adjust it - you basically get 40ml or so of coffee at 9bar pressure. Still, I’ve found it excellent. The main issue is it’s a one coffee at a time, very slow turn around way to make coffee. Ok if you make one for yourself but not viable to make more in any reasonable period.

More recently I went deeper down the rabbit hole and acquired a vbm superdomo, capable of pressure profiling. Awesome machine, complemented by a P64 grinder form one of those people who seem to cycle through end game coffee equipment at a massive loss every few months.

Is that https://9barista.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwo8S3BhDeARIsAFRmkOOVUu0KoWMkX0ww_YAG96nu0RNIvAwXfHbB0IHfogQlxy9D8iExjywaAi2-EALw_wcB - it looks good but isn't cheap.

I'll take a look at the Hario ceramic grinder.

Yes, one of those. It wasn’t cheap. I’d hoped it would be a final stop but taking approx 9-10 min per coffee means it’s not feasible when a bunch of people turn up on gravel bikes etc etc.

The machine I bought is a stop gap and will go once my Argos arrives. That was always the plan but they’re about 12months behind schedule. The upside is I ordered when they were cheap.

I’ll double check. Either way, drill works!

the argos looks rad! i've got a pavoni - neat machine, but a bit finicky, so is currently gathering dust in favor of a more pedestrian daily driver.

farty - i've got a timemore c2 for camping & pourovers; pretty decent bang for the buck. can't complain.

Thanks, will give the C2 a go.

This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfDLoIvb0w4&ab_channel=JamesHoffmann was good for any moka pot users.

^ Pre-boiling the water made a big difference for me when using the moka pot.

However, contrary to most youtube coffee hipsters, I've found I like the taste better when I pack down the coffee.

I tend to pack it tight as well.  I'm still playing with that though - so it's a work in progress.

Saying that it takes a ton more coffee if you pack it tight so maybe there's something in keeping it loose.  You have to really watch the heat tho as you have less room for error before it gets spluttery.

As I drink black coffee / americanos I like the moka pot and how simple it is.

I pack tight too, there's something pleasurable about riding the line of pressure just below what the fufu valve can handle at the lowest heat leading to a thick, chocolatey brew.

You all need to go to Finale Ligure for some trail riding, some Ligurian cuisine and excellent coffee.

But I live in Wellington, where they invented the flat white and every other coffee myth!
