The Scat belt style is generally my favorite, as I can always throw it on either with or without a pack (though I’m not a hip belt guy). Also, I feel very strongly that bear spray should always be on you, not on your bike, as it’s pretty easy to get separated from the bike in an animal encounter.

I rode the past seven years with the bear spray in the water bottle cage. I grabbed an old water bottle and cut it at the part where it narrows (it took a few tries to get the hole large enough for the bottle to fit). You need one of them $5 nylon bear spray holsters that MEC sells - this is key for a tight fit. You can easily grab and pull the spray out of the cage with the plastic part attached. I tested it a couple times :S
Yes, it looked super ghetto, thank you, but our trails were way off the beaten path so there was never any risk of running into fashion police. Bears on the other hand were a regular occurrence. Somehow I also managed to not spray myself but that was probably just dumb luck.
I've since moved into cougar country, so now I'm trying to figure that out...

Cougars and moose scare me way more than bears do. I've seen cougars twice and don't want to know how many times I haven't seen them. Once it was a cougar kitten, running up the road away from me, which had me very concerned where mom was. The other time, I glanced over into the woods at night and saw a pair of glowing eyes that moved in that particular catlike way.

What's the colour of the frame (RAL / Pantone etc) - it reminds me of the Gary Fisher I used to have back in the 90s.

That is one beautiful-looking machine.
You can really see how slim the chainstays are from this angle. Looks like it should be a pretty smooth-riding rear end despite the short chainstays.

Yeah, the seat stays are actually ovalized/flattened a bit in the center too. It’s no substitute for suspension but holds its own in the rough stuff.

Here is my Ragley Big Al, mostly stock. I'm thinking about adding sq lab 16 deg sweep bars. I usually use Oury mountain grips, but I'm trying out chromag wax grips. The trails near where I live are so hard packed that they're basically a pump track, ideal for a hard tail. I put a 2.3" minion SS on the rear and I should probably consider a faster rolling front as well (currently DHF II).
The spec is not bad for the price of the bike: Z2 fork, deore drive train and a DB8 (Sram mineral oil) brakeset which has been ok so far.
I have the steel version in Canada (Big Wig) which is a great bike too.
