NSMB- 2016 - Mountain Bike Tread (Full Suspension)
Can you give a mini review on the Magura post,it seems like a great idea for a dropper.
For sure… I have 2 rides on it and can definitely say its pretty cool but has its idiosyncrasies.
First off the attraction to me of the wireless dropper is the ability to move it to multiple bikes with minimum hassle… I bought the 30.9 diameter so that I could utilize seatposts from the 2 most common standards (ha) currently on the market. You can shim up to a 31.6. Out of the box the post is typical Magura quality and looks top notch. It needs to be charged via a micro USB adapter for a few hours to get the battery fully charged. The remote uses a CR watch battery so its easy to replace if necessary. Travel is 150mm.
Once its charged its apparently good for 400 up/down cycles at which point it warns you and give you another 20 or so movements before it shuts down. I am not sure where in the travel it stays at that point. Synchronization of the remote to the seatpost takes a few minutes at which point you are good to go. Slide the seatpost in to your frame, mount the remote to your bars via the rubber o-ring and you are good to go.
Now the salient points about using the post. The remote is part of Magura's Elect system and has 3 buttons which can also be synched to their forks and shocks so you can run everything from one remote. The upside to this is obvious, but the downside is if you only want to run the seatpost then you have 2 superfluous buttons that are of no use and tend to get in the way when riding. The buttons are quite small and only slightly raised so you are kind of riding by braille. It would be MUCH better if Magura had a single button remote only for the Vyron. As it stands now its awkward to use initially and takes a bit of time to get accustomed to.
On the trail there is a short delay after the remote is depressed before the servo motor opens the post for movement. So if you like the instant reaction of a Reverb, KS, Thomson, etc. you won't find find it with the Vyron. You need to keep weight on the saddle as you depress the remote before you can lower it to your desired position. You can't feather the remote like on either seatposts, its either on or off. Therefore when raising the saddle you need to position your butt at the correct height to stop the post from raising all the way up if that's your intention.
On my first ride I struggled with finding the remote button and timing my saddle height changes with the terrain. It was quite frustrating. By the 2nd ride I more or less had it dialed in and had a much better time but still a couple of OH SH!T moments due to operator error. I suspect I will get used to it with more riding time.
The overall operation of the post is very smooth and there is minimal lateral movement of the saddle. The biggest downside is the remote IMO. I have no doubt that Magura will address that at some point. I'll try and do a longer term review after more saddle time.
Nice bike. I run a bottle cage on mine on the mounts under the downtube. Other than looking goofy, it works fine.
There is enough room in the 111 and 134 Process if one were so inclined to install some threat serts on the inside of the frame for a bottle cage. The only issue would be interference with the cable guide. Plenty of room with a side mount cage.
:nerd:
Just got my '16 reign. So pumped.

Oh man that carbon Warden is NICE! Almost makes me want to start over on mine… Almost - the Delirium is such a blast to ride.
I drank the Kool-Aid.
Ibis Mojo 3, XL
Fox Float DPS Evol (130mm)
RS Pike (140mm)
Nox Composite Kitsuma rims w/i9 Torch hubs (2.8 Schwalbes)
Full X01 drive train
SRAM Guide Ultimate brakes
Easton Haven 35 bars/stem
RS Reverb Stealth 150mm
I was skeptical of the whole 'plus' thing, but feel like the 2.8s are the right balance. I'm not sure I'd want to run any bigger.
I'm also sure the sum is great than its parts (geometry, suspension design, etc.), but there's simply so much traction - both up and down. It descends faster than the 7" bike I used to ride. It's honestly the most fun bike I've owned.
