Do tell.

What's to tell? It's a friction system -- as long as the smallest cog and largest cog are in the same position the number of cogs in between are irrelevant and the cable pull ratio of the derailleur (Shimano or SRAM compatible) has a limited effect on shifter feel.

No I meant a steel 11-40 XT cassette. The XTR one isn't available yet. How much farther out could XT be?

There's nothing better than an Orangina after cheating death with Digger.

Probably a 2016 product? XT is usually one year behind in development. I have a couple 10spd cassettes to wear out first so no rush.

I was being a dick; It's obviously a Dura-Ace bar-con shifter on a Thumbie Plate. Shifting is friction.

It is hard to explain the super light action (no clutch resistance) ability to quickly drop/gain gears, the smoothness of the shifting, and the allure of being outside compatibility requirements of indexed set-ups (to run 11spd when Shimano's steel XT 11-40 cassette comes out you just need a chain/cassette) to someone who hasn't gone through the learning curve of riding it.

I ~ never miss a shift and personally love the set-up.

I [HTML_REMOVED]3 thumbies.

Barham told me back in 2009 after the fire if I built up another bike with thumbies he'd refuse to invite me out to shoot photo's.

Pretty sure my next hardtail build will be running a set of these or maybe these if I run 2x9.

Do that and I'll de-friend you. You gonna run toe clips and straps too?

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

The only thing I'd say is if you are going to do it go friction and just to commit to the learning curve.

Shifting is lighter, smoother, quieter, quicker compared to pushing through the indexed ratchet.

Yep really want a pair of those new Ritchey carbon bullmoose bars. Should be a 60mm version that is 760mm wide for 2015. Some thumbies on them.

Not sure anyone does a skinwall in 27.5. A custom Dugast tubular set of DHF's would be pretty out there.

Oh snap and I really liked those Onza's I rode oh Dan's bike for the EWS.

I do think 29'er is the better ht choice…but parts compatibility is going to win out. It would expand the budget past what I want. Already built up a nice set of 27.5 wheels and have two forks that fit it.

Speaking of thumbies. My XT one died 3 days ago..

The little pins finally gave up.

This talk of thumbies has me thinking of removing this,

For my basically annual post on the forum.

Some really gorgeous rides in this thread.

Changes for this year are 1X10 (from 1X9) with a X9 Clutch and a 34T NW, made it most of the way up frisby ridge, can see why a manual granny or a 40-42T cog would be a good idea.

Also got a Gravity Dropper, which has been flawless, and put on the serious tires (2.5 DH casing DHFs)

Still love this bike and don't want to change it. Anyone know if there are options for a new fork besides the new 36? Needs 1 1/8th, 150mm travel and ideally 20mm hub. My fork is fine right now but I can see a viable replacement being a limiting factor for the bike in the near future. Also might be an excuse for a saurai 65!

slow is smooth and smooth is fast

It's a Fox DOSS remote -- Shimano ergonomics, high leverage, bearing, return spring : makes Gravity Dropper super light action.

Cool. Think I will look into something like that though want to check the new 9Point8 lever. Though I see you have the newer GD version not the Classic version.
