NSMB - 2014 – Enduro / Trail Bike Thread

I have a 650b, 29 and 26 bikes and I would say that more than wheel size, overall geometry plays the most important part. The 29'er with its 71 deg HA is a wicked fast cornering bike and is fast, the 650b HT is slower feeling, but is has a 65 deg HA (On-One 45650b) and the 26 inch bike shreds the downs better than the others, but it is a TRc. Horses for courses. But, the one thing they all are is fun!

For sure there are factors other than just wheel size at play with my experiences to date moving to 650B… bottom line is I have no regrets making the switch and any perceived gain in performance is still a positive.

So I'm finally getting on this 1x train. Question… it seems a lot of you guys are riding without any sort of guide or bashguard. Has this given you problems? I like steep terrain and rocky stuff, when I can get it. I just don't want to invest the money in the ring just to destroy it or my chain on the first ride.

But, but, no bash guard is lighter and looks cool???

Most folks I know (exceptions for a few real smashers and a paranoid guy) do not run a guide with their narrow wide ring with no chain dropping issues.

A lot of people forgo a bash guard, but for technical riding it has always seemed silly to me the hang your expensive chain and chainring out there for a spanking. I run a bash guard personally (the same one I've had on multiple bikes over years -- cost of ownership = extremely low) and I smoke it often enough that I think the weight is worth it.

I've been running this http://www.blackspire.com/TrailX-Guide and it's been perfect. Going by the scraps and dings in the bash guard it's saved the ring a few times as well.

Same same. The Der Guides it has replaced have taken a licking as well

Side note…

I have noticed lately that I am constantly rolling away from riders on the trail, whether they are on either 26", 27.5", or 29" wheels it doesn't matter. I'm trying to figure it out. Maybe Hope hub bearings roll fast? Halp?

I notice this too, but the other way. i have to euro tuck on road descents to keep up with my gf (Gotta let her beat me somewhere i guess)

So I decided on the Blackspire Bruiser to start, no guide. I figure if it's really bad I can sell this off and just order the Trailx.

the Trailx does not work with a 30T ring so that eliminates it from my requirements , the Bruiser looks like a nice unit

I have been running single ring for years and I can't remember the last time I dropped a chain. I was running bash guard in my old setup though…been running with just a bare chainring for a while and have not had any issues either. I was looking at the bruiser though…looks like it would get the job done.
