Oi vey… how about a 68.5 degree (STOCK!) headangle minimum as one of the criteria…?

hmmm… dunno. 68-69 tends to define the "all mountain" category in the majority of the marble. my bike is 66-66.5 tho, so I'm not biased.

Bone-stock Slayer 50 19"
32lbs 9oz
20mm front axle
160mm/165mm f/r travel
2.4/2.25 f/r Maxxis Ardent (single ply I think)

This is the bike that has gotten me back on the mountains (other than a couple Whistler days on a rental Stinky and a '03 Brodie Devo) for the first time since I was a kid on my 94 Lava Dome.

For bragging rights it must be a rideable bike with the following:

  • 4-7" front wheel travel and 4-7" rear wheel travel
  • 2.2" minimum tire width (specify dual/single/UST ply)
  • specify 9mm, 15mm or 20mm front axle
  • full leg extension seat-post or a telescopic (must be able to realistically climb on the bike)
  • should an active NSMB board member with at least 50 posts

those rules don't eliminate some XC/Trail bikes
such as you could use a Rocky Mtn Element MSL 120mm travel with Fox Fit 120mm 15mm axle or Revelation 140mm 15mm axle, Stan's Flow rims, Schwalbe tires with snake skin, full XTR or mix of Race Face, XO or other, and a dropper post. Throw in a Cane Creek angleset head set to get what ever head angle qualifies

and you would still be under 25lb

So are you advocating a minimum 127mm rear standard?

Fully agree. I do know a few guys running the MSL's on the shore quite aggressively (shorter stems, wider bars, burlier tires), but we need to play fair.

Travel should be limited to 140mm - 170mm front and rear.

I say 180 in the front if it has travel adjust. I say so because my bike hopefully will :) It is a FR thread too

Jebus it's not rocket science.

Just start another stupid thread for the sub 140mm class of bikes.

Or make this one min 150mm and the new thread is 140mm and lower.

there's a (great) hardtail thread now. why not an xc/am thread - go as small as you want. i want to see some of these aggressive element msl builds!

though i'm not advocating for explicitly excluding them, i don't see the point in posting (even mostly) stock bikes

I think a trail bike thread is needed.

120-140mm travel being the only rule.

I'll post up a picture as soon as it's built. I think it's a full XTR bike, but 60mm stem and 30" bars from Chromag. Tires are 2.35 minions.
