I paid $30 for my 'Deore' pedals and cleats and haven't looked back. $30! I mean come on.
New to clipless
Once the SPD's get worked in and the tension is low they come out super easy. Don't have to think about it, just pull your foot away. Perhaps get your hands on a set that is used so you don't have to work it in from the get go.
People always ask me what's the phenomenon
Yo what's up? Yo what's goin' on- Adam Yauch
Well my xt trails lasted about a year and a half before the spring tension went on both pedals and I switched to dx's.

Did you try new cleats? That is a symptom of a worn cleat, tension seems low. Seems odd though that you couldn't adjust the tension up to your satisfaction. But I have small feet so I have less leverage to exit I guess. In all the years I have used Shimano pedals, and that's a lot of years,(1991 or 2?) I have never not been able to dial up the tension to my liking and I think I have mine fairly tight.
Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.
