new hub$$ and future fear

i'm thinking of building the wife a lightweight custom wheelset and going balls out on the hubs. in my mind i can justify it thinking that this wheelset, or at least these hubs will come with from bike to bike indefinitely. virtually a lifetime purchase. but but but… will a standard 15 x 100 and 12 x 142 even fit on a bike frame circa 2022?? i like really nice stuff as much as the next guy and will even buy it from time to time, but i fully expect many years of use and re use with this kind of investment in bike parts but i'm afraid of being fucked over by the industry on this one.

interchangeable axle isn't future proof. Especially with boost spacing, it's not simple as just replacing end caps

Buying something a tad cheaper/heavier like pro4 or 350´s and you still get the bling and quality but won´t hate yourself as much when that future new standard goes mainstream.

edit: Maybe 350´s arent som much bling, but you get what I´m aiming for.

Boost 148 might be around a bit longer, but maybe it won't.
I wouldn't go $$$ on a 142mm or NON-boost compatible hub anymore.
There are not that many current frames to be had with this "standard" for 2016. And 2017 won't improve on that.

Also you'll probably not be able to swap the wheel set to a 27.5+ e-bike. And that's where our sport is headed, right? :S

Wait until she gets a boost bike to go balls out on new hubs / wheels. In the interim pick up some nice used, light weight, current generation wheels on pinkbike or craigslist or nsmb buy/sell.

there aren't any. unless one is looking for entry level crap like what came on the bike or super elite world cup race wheels from some dudes 26er

350s are top of the heap IMO (and that of my wheel builder) but also surprisingly difficult to source in Canada. i don't know what's up with DT but their hubs are a bitch to get and my wheel guy says the same. typical Cdn backwater stuff for bike parts. asinine.

I'd certainly caution against spending big money on 100x15 and 142x12 hubset as they can't be converted to Boost.

Yep. Thankfully there's a heap of other brands available at LBSs that are of excellent and/or equal quality out there… But you're right - seems some brands just stop-gate goods into Canada and I'm left wondering "hey, where did mountain biking originate, folks…where did the 'core action start?!?!? Thaaaaaaaaaaat's right - NORTH VANCOUVER PEEPS!!!".

Keep the current hubs and just replace rims? Pretty easy changeover. Tape new rim to old rim, loosen spokes evenly, move em to the new rim one by one, retension. People who say you cant reuse spokes are nerds.

I suppose you could do this if you got exactly the same rims. Chances of buying different rims with the same ERD are pretty unlikely. Different ERD means new spokes.

I agree with the others, buying into any new hub size right now will be a risk. Boost is starting to gain a foothold, but with Boost + and other crap being thrown around, its wiser to buy something on the used market and see if the hub spacing wars subside.

I suppose you could do this if you got exactly the same rims. Chances of buying different rims with the same ERD are pretty unlikely. Different ERD means new spokes.

A few mm difference is ok. Rims are often in the same ballpark.
