My YT Canada experience

I am very excited to receive my 2018 YT Capra AL Comp. I hope it shows up soon, here is the story so far:

I read lots of bike reviews and watched a lot of Youtube videos about the YT Capra and it seemed like a great bike for me. Price is good, components are great and the brand seems cool. Plus if its good enough for Tippie and Gwin......

So I decided on the Capra AL Comp (I crash too often for carbon, and the build kit is great) sold my Cannondale Jekyll and went to the YT website to make an account.

Almost as soon as my account was finished, I received an email from JM from YT Canada saying hi, and offering his help for any questions I might have. I thought this was pretty cool, and I did have a few questions I wanted answered. JM confirmed my sizing (6'1" = XL Capra frame) and although the YT website said they were sold out until June 6th JM told me that there was one XL Capra Al Comp left that I could order. I thought it was meant to be and I went ahead with the order. I placed the order on May 29th 2018 and (now without a bike to ride!) prepared myself for the long wait to get my new Capra. Payment on the YT website was taken immediately and I received my order confirmation shortly after. So far, so good.

I knew I wouldn't hear anything until June 6th, as the bikes were sold out and YT Canada wouldn't get stock until then, but I still checked the YT website everyday to see if there had been any progress, and every time I checked it, it said "order has not been processed yet". Then eventually, June 6th rolled around and I rushed to the YT website excited to see the "Your Order has Shipped!" notification, and to start stalking my new bike using the tracking information YT says it provides.

But, alas, "your order has not been processed yet".

Next day? "your order has not been processed yet".

Next day?!: "your order has not been processed yet".

Bummer.

So I called YT Canada at their office in Kelowna. No Answer. The outgoing voicemail message said that the YT Canada staff were at a trade show in Quebec and would return on the 7th of June. This was a bit confusing as it was already the 8th of June, but I figured they were busy and would call me back soon. I left a message with my order number and asked them to call me back with an ETA on my bike.

I didn't get any communication from JM at YT Canada until June 11th, when he sent me an email reply with some bad news. My Capra somehow wasn't included in the June 6th shipment from Taiwan (even though I thought he said there was one left in stock..?) anyway he offered me 2 options:

Option 1: He would try and get my bike airmailed from Taiwan. This would take at least another 10 days once the shipping was confirmed, plus a few days for customs ect.

Option 2: He would have my order refunded.

Although this was a pretty disappointing turn of events, I told JM to please ship my Capra via airmail and let me know as soon as it was shipped and to provide me with tracking info. He replied back pretty quickly saying he had an XXL Capra in stock if I would rather have that right away, but I said I wanted to wait for the XL.

Today is June 14th, 2018. I haven't heard from JM in 3 days*, and I don't know if my Capra has been shipped yet, or when I can expect it. The YT website still says "your order has not been processed yet".

Pretty disappointing so far; I understand things happen and I am ok to wait a while longer for a great bike, but it is the lack of communication that is a let-down. It sounds like JM is the only YT Canada rep and must be crazy busy, so I'm going to stop bugging him for a while and see what happens.

I'm probably just being super impatient and I'm definitely driving the guys at YT nuts with my emails. I'm sure I'll hear something soon.

*I just got an email from JM saying there would be no update until the bike arrived in Canada and cleared customs.

Unfortunately it's par for the course.  See my thread from last year.

Amazing bikes, but YT-Canada is only one guy... and after all my bitching, I still got a Capra this year.

You have learned a valuable lesson that I relearned this year: if you only have one bike don't sell it until the new bike is in your hands. Delays are common and companies get really squirrelly with communication when they're facing lots of delays.

My buddy got his CF Pro Capra only because after 2 weeks of no replies he was told (after ordering in mid May) that the bike wouldn't be in mainland North America until July 6th and then further processing etc etc.

So he cancelled the order and ordered a similar model, different colour that was in stock on Monday and got it first post Wednesday.

Damn sucks to hear about your experience, this is very similar to what I had read in the threads throughout the years about YT Canada when I was shopping for a new bike recently.

I was on the fence between YT and Commencal and ultimately went with Commencal even though both companies had the model/size I wanted in stock and ready to ship with fear of having an experience similar to yours with YT.

Not to bash on YT - there's no doubt they make amazing bikes for the price but they seem to still have inconsistent customer service which is troubling considering you're not going through an LBS.

With regards to my experience with Commencal - they always picked up the phone when I called, were super cool and helpful with all my questions, their email response was always within a few hours - 1 day. When I ordered the meta am 4.2 from them this month it was shipped within 24 hours of ordering and I received it the day after it shipped - a total of 3 days from ordering to my doorstep. I was blown away to say the least (although I should note I do live in Vancouver and their warehouse is just nearby in Squamish)

Hope YT pulls through and you get your bike! All this hassle will go away once you hit the trails for the first time on it :)

At least tell me the Capra is worth the wait!

I’m a bike slut. I love them all so my opinion shouldn’t be held in high regard.

That said, it’s a fuckin’ beaut.  (As soon as I replace those e13 tires that would flat on a sea wall ride).

Buddy of mine lives in Zurich and rides the new Capra. Raves about it. The most expensive build is ridiculously cheap over there.

Agreed here! I have sold a dh bike before the new DH bike showed up but never ever going to do that with a trail bike, love biking too much to be in 'limbo' and if I needed the money to pay for the next one I might be stretching my budget too thin lol

quick update:

I had an email from JM this afternoon saying that he was looking at upgrading me into a Capra CF model so I didnt have to wait for the taiwan shipment. No news if this is going to happen, but I think its a really nice gesture. Lets see what happens next.

Great customer service if JM can do that for you.  Like many others, my experience with YT Canada has been similar.  JM is a great guy, the difficulty is getting a hold of him.

If they had more staff to ensure that emails are responded to in a timely fashion (1-2 days) then I think everyone would be way less frustrated.

I've been singing the praises of DVO and Nobl lately.  Both those companies have responded within 24 hours (even on a Sunday for DVO) and I have received top notch service.

Over two weeks and you don't even know if your bike has shipped? I do almost all of my own wrenching so buying from a LBS is not too important for me so I tried buying online. Lets just say it is nice to be able to take the bike back to the LBS to have them fix anything they screwed up.

  • ride 1: bolt fell out of my chain guide on the trail
  • ride 2: tubes popping holes spontaneously (no really, I think they were defective tubes - I can go into details but will spare you all)
  • ride 3: the other tube goes
  • ride 4: the creaks start
  • ride 5-10: OMG the creaking is driving me nuts

After switching over to tubeless, finding a bolt that fits the stupid chain guide and dissassembling the entire suspension, lubing all the bolts and pivots (they were all just metal on metal - it is finally riding well.

This all being said, you can have this for 4800 bucks CAD and it will be on your doorstep in 2 days from Jenson.
