MTB 4X Weight Weenie thread..
Time for a new front wheel for my rig, I was thinking…
721, 32 hole, black
Sapim CX-Ray spokes (anyone have any experience one way or another? They're proving hard to find 'round these parts)
Hope Pro 2, 20mm, red (matches my rear)
And a Maxle Lite to keep 'er snug.
I'd go lighter, but this bike serves double duty as a street bike and I am HARD on wheels. This set-up should save me 290 grams, give or take, and where it really matters…Rotational weight on a front-heavy bike.
Advice? Recommenddations? Horror stories with any of the parts listed? Scale shot soon, Promise!
Damn good parts there, just make sure you get a good wheel builder to put them together.
I would do triple butted spokes, myself, but I'm not sure if that would cut into your weight savings.
Thanks - god knows it'll be expensive. My wheel builder…well he builds wheels for Frankie Vass (20" and 26") so I trust him.

Using the DT Swiss calculator and some (claimed) numbers, the Sapims save me 61 grams compared to straight gauge DT spokes. I didn't bother running the numbers for butted spokes. I guess my main concern is over the strength of the Sapim spokes. Pinkbikers claim they're fantastic, not sure if that's a good thing or not. Checked MTBr, nothing satisfactory.
My other winter mods will be swapping out the seat and post (Thomson and a Fit ECCD I think), replacing the rear 2.1 SB8 with a 1.95 SB8 (it's almost worn out, anyways), and that front wheel. May get me under 25, which is my goal, if not it'll get me close. My cranks are heavy as hell but I'm a tremendous hack. Maybe a Ti spindle…
I'll be adding weight shortly (I think), lacing a 729 on the rear to replace the Pimplite I brutalized. This weight thing would be easier if I weren't such a chronic under-rotater.
Edit: I'm running a set of old 2.1/2.0 WTB Nanoraptors. Fast rollers, albeit a bit sketch at times. I think I'm going to try something new in the near future.
WTB Wolverine 1.95 (498 grams), the Wolverine 2.2 is 595 grams.
DT Swiss Revolution spokes are lighter. No issues on strength either. I'd run them on my DH bike, but have only had them on my last 2 DJ bikes without issues.
No claimer.
Am I seeing that right 22.97 lbs?!!!
That is correct. About one pound lighter than I though.
And to answer the rep messages, I'm running hope hubs, the rear having the 10mm bolt-on option. I also have a 24-12 ratio.
how do you find the gear ratio? enough jam on the top end? I liked the "kustom" crankset.
nice riot, btw… :)
we had a customer come and do a Riot with a sweet white, black, and gold colour scheme. looked super hot.
The gear ratio is pretty good. The jumps around here don't require too much pedalling to get up to speed. I think that this next summer will see some dual action, so I'm gonna source out a 26T or 28T granny ring. Cranking on the pedals right now is a little sketch, cause I don't have a single speed cog on yet. 12T is hard to find.

freewheel or freehub? we have like 3 or 4 DMR 12t single-speed cogs sitting at the shop. Call Norco up.
I think the Azonic meatgrinder 2-ring cranks have a 38t big ring, so they probably have a larger granny.

I know e13 made 26 tooth (and probably other sizes too) 64bcd rings, and they don't look ramped either. However try as I might I can't find any evidence online, only what my two eyes saw in a bike shop a few months ago. I'd try to track one of those down if I were you, e13 makes good stuff (duh).
Love the bike by the way.
I just went down the true weight weenie path: Ti Hope rotor bolts, and I filed down and polished my seatclamp. 3 grams off the clamp for free, 7 grams off my rotor bolts for $27. threw a 1.1-1.5 tube on the front (in a 2.1 tire) because that's the cheapest tube I could find, at $3, pleasantly surprised to see it weigh 115 grams instead of the claimed 170. Probably going to put one on the rear too.
Looking at picking up some XT or new Saint cranks (I'm a hack so probably Saint) so I can put on my never-used 32t E13 ring and bash. That shit is expensive though!
just FYI, the azonic meatgrinder crank has a 26t aluminum granny. as for getting just the ring, call Momentum Dist. I guess.
