I plan on building up a new DJ / 4X bike pretty soon and Chainreaction offers the Kenda Small Block 8 at a very reasonable price. They're only available in 1.95" width so I'm a little concerned they might be too narrow. I'd order one as a rear tire - will I be fine riding it or will it actually be too narrow?

On a really groomed course, you'll be fine with a 1.95" width. I run a 2.35" front and 2.1" rear. The 2.35" is a bit overkill but I was too cheap to buy another 2.1" to match the rear.

1.95 is nice. I'd run that for jumps, pump tracks, concrete, etc. What rim is it going on?

^It'd go on a Spank Tweet Tweet rim, 30mm width.

Those tires will only see DJs, pumptracks and maybe a Fourcross race every now and then. It's lighter than a 2.1 tire and faster because of the decreased rolling resistance - what are the drawbacks of such a fairly narrow tire?

Anyone please?

I gotta order in the next minutes and I'm trying to decide whether I should order the 1.95 or 2.1

Hmm, with the 30mm width I'd probably go for the 2.1 tire. The flatter profile of a narrow tire in a wide rim will make the tire transition weird/abrupt when cornering.

Man, the one weight weenie game I can actually play dies a miserable death. Figures.

I'm excited, as you could imagine. That set-up you see above cost me a total of $205. Should bump my bike to 27-28 pounds, hopefully I'll knock that pork back off shortly. Still waiting on a frame from Specialized.

Frame: 2009 Specialized P (warranty #2, hurry up Specialized!)
Fork: 2008 Rockshox Pike 426 Air U-Turn, lowered and shaved.
Headset: Chris King NoThreadSet 1.125", red
Stem: Black Market Underboss, polished (flipped)
Handlebar: Answer Pro-Taper, ti Satin, 1" x 26"
Grips: ODI Rogue, red ano lockrings
Front wheel: Sun S-Type/Novatec 20mm hub, MEC 26x1.1" tube, Kenda Small Block 8 2.1" Kevlar folding tire
Cranks: Primo Powerbite
Pedals: Blackspire Maggy, black (really Wellgo MG-1)
Sprocket: Profile Imperial, 33t, polished
Chainguide: E13 LG-1, soon to be weight-tuned
Chain: KMC X9SL Ti-N
Rear wheel: Hope Pro 2 Trials/SingleSpeed w/ steel female axle bolts, 32 Atomlab red spokes, Mavic 729 rim (destickered and Core-stickered), MEC 26x1" tube, Kenda Small Block 8 2.1" Kevlar folding tire
Cassette: SRAM PG-950 reduced to 6 speeds, 11-23 (160g only!)
Brake: Avid BB7 w/ green Odyssey linear pull cable, Odyssey monolever, Hope 140mm rotor (only 85g), Hope ti rotor bolts
Post: 2005 Specialized OEM (chopped, only original part remaining on this bike)
Seat: Gusset
Derailleur: SRAM X.0 short cage
Shifter: SRAM X.9

Replacing my tires with 1.9s would save me 200g of rotational weight, however I still have about 30% tread life left on my 2.1s and another set of 2.1s to replace them. Replacing the saddle, which I plan to do shortly (mostly so my other bike can have a decent saddle, hand-me-down style) will drop another 100g. A new front wheel, at last calculation, would save me 250g off of a VERY front-heavy bike, it would be expensive though.

I've been waiting on a new frame (and hence scale shot) for the past two months, so cut me a break!

Chromag Monk. I don't mind drops to flat and casing a few jumps with this build.

This is going to be expensive….ah well. 24 pounds with gears could be within reach.

Throw some part names in that spreadsheet so we know what you are talking about.

man all these weight losses has got me excited to try to beat ur weight kperras. im getting a pro 2 hub soon as well as some 15mm lowers for my fox. what weight u at kperras?

Also, some people like skinnies. What better way to teach rear-wheel awareness - of which there is precious little around here? Besides, give it 5 years, and theyll be retro-chic again.

22.93lbs last time I checked. A couple of things I could do to lose a few lbs:

- Swap frame for Banshee Amp/Transition Bank/Blk Mrkt Mob
- Cut my precious full length masterpiece post down to a nub
- Swap out the holzfeller bars for Stylo bars.
- Foam grips instead of lock-ons
-The Deva saddle isn't all that light. Could be swapped to a SLR Ti.
- Ditch the front 2.35 Small Block 8 for a 2.1 Specialized Captain Control
- Run tubeless
- Swap the thomson stem out for something lighter, maybe a sunline.

Balls, you're right. How could I miss that?

Front - Prebuilt 36h S-Type on Novatec, 2.1 Small Block 8 and MEC tube
Replacing with - Pro 2 20mm, Sapim CX-Ray spokes, Mavic 721, 1.9 SB8 and smaller MEC tube

Rear - 729, Atomlab spokes, Pro 2 T/SS, singlespeed kit, 2.1 SB8, MEC tube
Replacing with - 721, CX-Ray spokes, 1.9 SB8, smaller MEC tube, and that cassette I posted above (+ aluminum lockring)

Gradual process, since my tires and rear build still have lots of life in them. From there, a lighter seat is on order and maybe a titanium crank spindle (Primo)

The prospect of 23 pounds singlespeed and 25 pounds geared excites me.

4x dudes… i'm your average nshore rider who loves DH/FR/AM and am interested in getting into riding some 4x… i always love the 4x track at the bottom of WBP… albeit manytimes just can't get it dialed and suck… where's the 4x riding at here in the lower mainland? lafarge? indoor series?…

i've been toying with the idea of building up a light hardtail for AM/DJ and 4x riding… would a bike like a chromag stylus/gypsy be a decent 4x frame? don't want a dedicated 4x/DJ bike like the riots, etc. but something more versatile… that would also be fun riding epic whistler loops, etc… input appreciated!
