I'm thinking of one of these fork and am leaning towards a '03 Monster. Are they really that heavy? Do they feel better than pre '03 models or would I be better with a lighter one?

They definetly are heavy, but not anything that you couldnt get used to.

i have ridden an 03 on my friends bikes and i ride a 99 and i personally like my fork better, the extra 4 pounds is noticable but not something to get used to. 7" is all ya need in most cases so why not save money and get a bombproff fork that perfroms the same.

Is the performance really worth the weight?

They are enitrely worth it. The dampening is AMAZING. I use like 3 inches of travel on stuff that bottoms my buddys boxxer, and my other buds jr. the weight is noticible at first but after a week your arms get stronger so you dont notice it. I can manual mine fine. The only other fork id ratehr have is an avy.

I dont like tall bikes. Everyone I ride with has their front end sooo tall. That's one thing I dig about my '02 Monster. It's short. I have the 03 crownset (mega cheap) with the integrated and my front end is super low and agile.

The 02s were the perfect year. My front end never feels too heavy, but it stays on its line. the dampening is hugely improved over the 99-01s and with the way I have mine setup it sticks to the ground like a true DH fork, but when it comes time to land the big shit, it sucks it up beautifully. When it comes time to pop steep lips, it just flies. I love it. Also, I've cased huge gaps and drops and had no problems (cept broken top crown) so there isn't a strength issue between the years….whatever.

The 02's are prime. I dont plan on ever letting my fork go.

I never owned an 02, but I do have an 03. I was really skeptical about the weight . . . until I actually rode it! I love my fork! It handles drops great (duh), and is even does really well at the dirt jumps (that was a surprise). If you use the integrated stem and a bar with less than 2" rise, the front end shouldn't feel so tall either. I adapted to jumping it, from using a DJ1, in about fifteen minutes with no problem. The only time I notice the weight of the fork is when I'm loading it in the back of my truck. :D

For me, it was all about reliability. I have heard lots of people complain about Stratos, Manitou, and Boxxer, for a number of reasons, and I wasn't happy with the design of the 03 Super T. I was warned against the Shiver for my "riding style" (I don't race and I hate flex), so I tried the Monster on a whim. No regrets.
