MEC = Dangerous

last year i went in there to buy a pair of 5tens. the only pair of low tops they had in my size had been worn, and not in the store, on the trails. the shoes were dirty, had cleat marks on the soles. guy asks me if id buy them for a discount, went next door to cove to pick them up brand new for cheaper than mecs used sale price.

a couple weeks ago i needed to buy hiking boots, didnt want to support mec but deakin didnt have the size of boots i wanted while mec did. im still pissed that i bought those boots from them. the only service i got from them was the kid who went into the back to get me a few sizes to try on. so much for them being gear experts. oh yeah the boots were 25 bucks cheaper at deakin then at MEC, i asked the lady after they price matched if i got anymore money off since no one actually helped me.

gear experts my ass, they are the canadian tire of outdoor gear.

I had a set of Fritchifreeride bindings break, I walked in MEC fixed em on the spot. they didnt even ask if I bought them there (which I didnt. I like the fact that we have a supermarket of outdoor gear with decent prices.

Fuck the Sierra Club.

That's no longer the case. This past weekend I bought some 5-10's from MEC for me [HTML_REMOVED] my wife that were significantly cheaper then at any of the local bike shops. I went to 4 bike shops on the North Shore to see if I could find a decent deal and still support a local bike shop. Wasn't happening.

I even asked one of the bike store guys what kind of deal he could give me if I bought two pairs of 5-10's and a pair of goggles - his price after a 20% discount was still higher then MEC's list price.

I kept $60+taxes in my wallet so I don't give a shit if the Sierra Club got a fraction of 1% of the sale price.

exactly how much dough does Mec give to the sierra club anyway. what percentage is it of thier other donations?

or check out Blue Toque Sports Swap - locally owned and started business selling mostly used gear.

I got mountaineering boots, my back-country boots, ice axe and crampons there - all told probably spent barely $100 on it all - all good high end stuff - just used.

pair of Head Monsters with bindings - 2008 model - $300 plus $80 to get some tuning/base repair.

Best deal I found there - Sram 9.0 ESP carbon fibre derailleur - looks like it has never been used - $20.

I'd like to know this as well. Is it a case of "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"?

Even if it was a dollar I wouldn't shop there based purely on principle.
