OMG - 10 Grand to upgrade sea kayaks at a kids summer camp! Unforgiveable.
Mussolini made the trains run on time.
Yeah, i just compared MEC the Fascists.

I have more hate towards the Sierra club than just their stance on mtbing. They
are against anything they "perceive" as a threat. A lot of the time they will disregard
science and facts when those facts disagree with their cause.Examples on Kauai:
-Super ferry
-Boats in Hanalei (both tourist and cruising boats anchored in the bay)
-Hunting of feral pigs and goats (oh, no don't kill the animals even though they're causing more damage than the track homes in Poipu)
-Mountain biking (they sure can change a pro biking government into a anti one).
These are just what I can remember off the top of my head.Fuck the Sierra club (no I can't say that enough).
If you care about the environment, give to one that makes a difference like
the Nature Conservancy.
It's amazing how so many have forgotten the Sierra Club's two faced behaviour in the late 80's and early 90's. They'd approach a mountain bike group and claim to be "on their side". We help you and vice versa. yeah right, as soon as these two faced shit weasels got what they wanted they did everything possible to make mountain bikers look like the 5th horsemen of the apocalypse.
you know you're a gear monger too - admit it.
the day they issued you your ruck, webbing, compass, boots etc (your KIT) was one of the happiest in your life.
come on - you know its true…
Speaking of gear. Just got a new piece of kit given to me by the new father in law. The LT Col gave me a gift, a new Canadian issue Gore Tex jacket.
Tried it out today in a monsoon. Wonderful piece of kit. And I didn't pay a dime for it.
dude - you're in Comox - COMOX! I live in COurtenay - COURTENAY! - unfortunately for me you aren't even on the way to the trails!! What can I say - I'm lazy and I like to RIDE my bike to the LBS occasionally.
but don't worry - I'll come visit you again soon…
What are you talking about! I'm on the way to the Northeast Woods. :)
Jah…everyone has a bad experience in a shop sometimes. I've heard the things you have said about every shop in existence. I currently work at Blacks and find it hard to believe you would get big attitude right when you pulled out a wad of cash. This is all of course assuming you are the perfect customer which we all know bike shops only get.
Here's a good idea. Shop at a good LBS that deserves the coin, and keep going there. If you do you will realize how great it is to place where they try hard to help, and come home feeling happy.

It was a LONG time ago. I should let it go. Arrowsmith Bikes was more recent still almost three years ago though.
I have a long memory.

lol… so MEC does some good charitable work, therefore we should overlook the donations they give to anti-mountain bikers. Solid reasoning.
So again - using BC numbers for 2008 - 15K out of a 442K list (which I don't think included a couple of their major donation areas). Anyway - that's about 2-3% ratio. They have a large membership base and have to spread the cash around to appease many different voices. For the local good they do, I have a tough time seeing how they are anything but a net positive force in our society.
But the level of rhetoric I'm reading from you and from Drew reminds me of when the anti-abortion / christian right lobby try to shut down radio and television stations for running contraceptive ads.
Mountain bikers - ride off road, in teh nature.
Sierra Club - help get these areas shut down, or makes attempts to keep people out.
MEC - gives money to the Sierra Club. Could be $1, could be $15k, doesn't matter because they are supporting a group that wants us out. Any other charitable donations they contribute to does not make their support of the SC any better. They offer sick dealz on tubes so this matter may be overlooked.
Make all the excuses you want and calling it rhetoric or whatever, but the Sierra Club has shown to be a threat to our access to land that we use. Honestly I don't even know how a mountain bike rider could defend this?

Speaking of "level of rhetoric."
Really?

So you won't shop at MEC because the provided money to support the Sierra Club initiative to keep development out of the Flathead Valley? Or because money was given to the Sierra Club in general and they have resolved to follow what IMBA believes are good trail policies? Or because money was given to the Sierra Club and their San Fransisco chapter has adopted an anti-mountain biking stance?

FWIW- It's not just the SF chapter, it's every chapter. When they get a chance to
shut us down or our usefulness is over to them, they will shut you out of "their"
wilderness.
If Sierra club had any sense of honor I'd support them, until that day happens….
fuck sierra club.

You know that MEC is very responsive to concerns right? If you're at all concerned - why don't you contact them?
^^
Reading through the list, it looks to me like MEC supports specific projects and initiatives. This isn't just some blanket endorsement of the Sierra Club from what I see. If the Sierra Club has a project that lines up with the core values of MEC, then I don't have a problem if they help fund that project.
Mussolini made the trains run on time.

I think that's as close as Godwin's law is going to get in this argument.

I have a long memory.
I had a bad experience at two shops in Victoria (who some apparently love) years ago, and I refuse to set foot in them again. Came down to the whole "new to the sport so we're going to rip you off and treat you like shit" attitude.
I don't think having a long memory is a bad thing at all.
