Anyone got any time in on one of these forks?

I'm thinking about picking up an '07 All Mountain SL1. I'm looking at either this or the Z1 RC2. I'm looking to put it on my '04 Giant AC1 to get it through the summer, then put the fork on my hardtail and buy a new squishy bike. I don't go huge (4 foot drop on a good day) and am pretty light (155 lb). I mostly ride Ledgeview, Sumas, Bear, Woodlot, and Vedder. I'm a bit of a hack.

If anyone here has ridden one, what type of riding have you done on it? And please don't say "all-mountain" ;) give me some specific places.

Does this fork suck for freeriding?

Hey Tom I have the o6 z1 light rc2 with eta 130-150 mill. Its on my 07 Kona Howler. I have ridden this fork hard for 7 months now mostly at the woodlot and Burke. Its an awesome fork I am really impressed. I would say its a good freeride fork. I hope this helps:)http://bb.nsmb.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Tom,

I switched a 2005 AM1 for a 2006 Z1 SL on my Norco Six because of the 20mm axel and the fear of the AM not being able to withstand bigger hits on places like whistler. If I am not mistaken the AM crown is lighter duty than the Z1. Keep in mind-I weigh 195lbs. I do miss the ETA on the AM!

I ride all mountion i.e.-Burke, SFU, Fromme, Whistler, Galbraith.

Also to take into account when getting reviews the AM OEM forks are different than the All Mountain forks. I think this was just a 2006 thing.

Seems as though people have been experiencing some problems with the All Mountain 1 SL.

I haven't ridden one either of the forks mentioned, but my '03 Z1 FR is still going strong. You can't go wrong with the reliability of Marzocchi coil/oil, so if you want something that's easy to adjust and maintain, I'd say go with the Z1 RC2. If you like to fiddle around with air pressures, then maybe an air fork is for you. Despite the negative reviews of the All Mountain 1 SL, I've heard pretty good things about the 66 SL1 ATA. Noel from Knolly has spent a lot of time on one, and he seemed to really like it - that is, after he got it dialed in.

Yup - precisely. The Marzocchi Air forks are really really dialed this year performance wise, but there were some birthing issues with the top caps and the "auto travel adjust" :) Marzocchi has a fix out now for the first gen forks and the new forks are supposed to be coming fixed.

Either way, once they are working properly (which Naz at the North Van Marz office can do), the air forks are really, really good. I mean, they pretty much feel almost like coil forks. We've got customers on the AM1 SL, the 66SL1 ATA and the 888SL ATA and they are all really impressed with their forks.

Just don't bother using the recommended air pressures on the sticker on the fork lower - do a search on the MTBR suspension forum and there is a ton of helpful advice on how to set up these forks, in particular the 66SL1 ATA.

Cheers!

Noel

I found tons on the 66SL1 ATA but not so much on the AM SL1. Even without the settings dialed in properly ( a quick ride after putting the fork on before it got dark) it felt much better than my old fork ('04 slider +). I'll have to tweak it a bit before my next ride.

Hey Tom:

I don't know if this helps you or not, but I'm about 210 pounds and have the following pressure settings in my AM1 SL:

Par: 7-7.5 Bar
Main Chamber: 5-5.5 Bar

rebound - compression - set to taste.

Cheers!

Being that I weigh 155…not much

In a thread on MTBR I found a link to a document on the Marzocchi website for setting up the SL forks, and it has two charts for air pressure. One for the 66 and 888 SL, and one for the AM, Corsa and XC forks. The sticker on my fork leg is the chart for the 66 and 888 (much higher pressures). I've set it up at the lower pressures off the website and will report back after I ride it tomorrow.

Hey Tom:

Just divide my weight into yours and adjust the air pressures appropriately. That should get you close.

Cheers!

OK…I had to convert from Bar to PSI first then figure out the difference for rider weight. That works out to 75-81 PSI in the bottom and 54-60 PSI in the top. That's about half of what is on the sticker on the fork leg. I'm headed to the woodlot so we'll see how that works out. Thanks Noel!

With 60 in the top and 80 in the bottom it feels pretty damn good. Very plush. On root drops it seems to really dive through the travel more than I would like it to, but on small jumps it's butter. I didn't really push it as I wanted to get used to it. I'll have to see what it can do on some more familiar ground this week/
