Started to rebuild my fork and noticed the foam rings were pretty dry. Hopefully that's the culprit.

The spring condom was shredded and needs to be replaced. Anyone know of a good replacement material?

Heat shrink. However If the spring cover is mostly gone then your gonna want to change your oil as your spring wrap has now turned the oil in your forks into plastic sludge.

Also carrot top, which 55 did you try? Knocking marzocchi because a 55r felt like poop is like writing off rockshox entirely because a domain doesn't feel as good as a 36 kashima, or a top end lyric.

I've had a 2010 888 rc3 evo thats coming up on its 4th season now, and I've never had a more reliable piece of equipment. It may not be as immediately tuneable as the air sprung offerings from rockshox or fox, but once you get the right spring, and get your settings dialled It's hard to beat the high end zocchi's.

Which 55? The older 55R with the Suntour internals were seriously terrible, the RC3 platform is superb.

It was a 2012 55R. Haven't really tried the 55RC3.

See above reply.

I've also tried an older model 66 (2007 I think), also garbage. However the 2011 888 EVO TI I tried was ok. It did lack the variety of adjustments found on other high end dual crown offerings (Fox, RockShox), but the performance was pretty close if not just as good.

Yeah I had the older 55r and it was the worst fork ever, but moved to a 55RC3 and it is buttery goodness.

Original poster here - I just wanted to follow up on this thread in case anyone else had the same issue. I sent the fork back to warranty and they replaced the lowers. They didn't mention what was wrong but I think the bushings were too tight. Now the fork feels like a Marzocchi! No more stiction! This fork rocks!

Interesting, I found that the Marz 55 was the worst fork I have ever ridden.

I'm surprised to hear that. I've got a 2011 55 rc3 ti, and it's the best single crown I've ridden. My last single crown was a fox 36 float and, while it was lighter, it paled in comparison with regard to performance.

From what I've heard, most 55 owners from 2010 on are pretty satisfied with their forks.

I tried a 2012 55R, so that's probably why is wasn't good.
