maybe go for something that is waterproof/shockproof.
Though those cams are ugly as sin.

For compacts I like the Canon S90. Super compact. Manual settings. Probably a bit over your range at around $400. If you're a novice-but-improving photographer eventually you'll want to be able to control your exposure and aperture settings.

the things I would consider are:

- lens range
- waterproof/dustproof/shockproof
- HD video

personally I like having a wide lens even if I have to sacrifice zoom. HD video is nice too. All have huge megapixels these days but like Biggles said its really more down optics, which is a little tougher to discern from specs.

I use a Panasonic TS-1 (and I guess the TS-2 is the newer version?) and its decent. Definitely NOT waterPROOF though, just resistant. Swimming with it didn't kill it but I imagine that water all over the battery, card, usb port etc is not ideal. Adorama was about $100 less than LD after shipping.

personally I don't think the 28mm lens is anywhere near wide enough for good helmet camming
