I know there was another thread somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Looking for some lights for the occasional night right over the winter. Don't want to break the bank. What should I be looking at?

Very satisfied with my Gemini Xera from a few years ago. Very good quality and enough lumens if you have one on the head and one on the bars. It also comes with a headband, so you'll have the most powerful headlamp of the campground when you go camping.

More expensive than some other options, but the quality is there, they have a great service, it's a Canadian company, etc.

I'd buy another one from them.

hard to beat the ridiculously cheap ($25 ea) solarstorms. i run two of these (one on bike, one on lid). had them for two winters with no issues.

+1 on the Solarstorm X2. The X3 claims more light but I can't tell the difference between the 2 and 3 on the trail.

Batteries on the Solarstorm lights I have are now shot. Anyone know of any better quality batteries available for the lights?

I've been totally happy with the solar storms light output, but i think battery life/quality can vary between vendors. My last battery only ran about ~1.5hrs with it set on low during climbs. I usually end up carrying a spare pack JIC. For the price you can't complain and it's worth upgrading from a reputable battery source when needed. My last lights grew legs and i recently ordered two net sets for $31 usd (US vendor - delivered to the border) . Same price from China to Canada, just a much longer delivery period.

I have 2 solar storms (like $30 ea) , and a niterider lumina ($100).

I feel like having one name brand reliable light is a good thing, and the fact that the niterider is a self contained light with no wires /battery pack is nice.

There are some better self contained options out there now (I've had the niterider for a while) look at black burn, lezyne, fenix, cygolite, there's lots.

Mtbr.com has insane amounts of info on lights, their lights shootout is a good run down on lots of lights from name brands, and the forum has lots of people posting about the Chinese knock offs as well.

Exposure Lights are the bomb for self-contained… I have 2…. very impressed… not cheap however.
