Light tires with sticky rubber

As discussed in the Maxxis Assegai review recently posted on the front page, there is quite a difference between Maxxis' Maxx Terra and Maxx Grip rubber compounds, but Maxxis only offers Maxx Grip in their heavy Double Down and DH casings, with the faster-rolling Maxx Terra on their lighter EXO and EXO+ casings. Maxx Grip is preferable in the wet, to the extent that many will lug around 1300 g tires on their trail bikes just for the sticky rubber. But there must be a better way.

Which brands make tires in the 1000 - 1100 g range in 29 with rubber compounds similar to Maxx Grip?

The new E*thirteen 2.4" TRS A/T Race MOPO also sound promising but I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere yet, at least not online.

Apparently the Maxxis DHF WT is available in an EXO carcass with Maxx Grip at least from some German Online stores; I would be interested to know how well that works on wet roots and rocks as well (as a front tire).

I have DHF exo 27.5x2.5 3c maxx grip front and rear on my bike. I think they're listed right around 1000g maybe a little under. Don't know if that combo comes in 29 or not.

They're starting to wear out I should keep my eyes open for them again, just looked and tbsbikeparts.com doesn't have them now. Edit:CRC does.

And I don't see the same combo in 29 on the maxxis website, lame!

'Supergravity' casing ultra soft magic Mary lists at 1160g for 29. Too bad they don't slap that on the snakeskin casing, I found the orange 'soft' compound not good enough.

I like it a lot, works really well on wet rocks & roots & woodwork. Noticeable difference in grip with maxxterra. Also rolls a bit slower but not too bad.

Nice, I see the DHF 29 Exo Maxx Grip on bike-discount.de. A bit strange they wouldn’t be listed on Maxxis’ product page.

Maybe not available in all markets? Who knows...

I see it here too https://r2-bike.com/MAXXIS-Tire-Minion-DHF-29-x-250-WT-3C-MaxxGrip-TR-EXO

Has anyone run into the new E*thirteen 2.4" TRS A/T Race MOPO tires for sale anywhere locally (North Van / Van) or online? I'd really like to try the 29" version on the front.

Otherwise maybe I'll try the wide and sticky DHF instead of my usual wet weather go to, the Magic Mary Snakeskin Soft TLE Soft.

Anyone use the specialized butcher 2.6 GRID tyre? My wife has them on her bike and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to put a heavy 2.5 minion DD max grip up front for the winter. The specialized are much lighter and if the grip is comparable, I'd let her run the lighter ones in the wet.

I ordered mine direct from e13 and had them shipped to Point Roberts. Arrived in two days and I don't think I paid for shipping.

I've been running them front and rear since last November, through the winter, they were fine except if pressure was above 28psi, which is where they seem to lose grip. Always on the rear, I keep the front around 23-25 and it's been solid.

I plan on keeping it on the rear and switching to the recently purchased WTB Vigilante 2.8 High Grip/Light Casing at some point over the winter, then back to the Butcher for next summer.

I only see the DH casing in 29 with Maxx Grip on their site.

Oops....I was looking on the US site. Very little selection on the Canadian site.

I have one as well. Not a bad tyre but grip on wet roots and rocks is in no way comparable to Maxxgrip. Rolls very fast, though.

Keep in mind that soft Maxxis rubber hardens considerably in cold weather. Specialized Gripton and Conti Black Chili don't.

Regarding the TO: Continental Baron and Kaiser in Black Chili rubber are supposedly more grippy than Maxxterra and lighter than DD. Haven't tried them yet so this is second hand information.
