My 10 yo has finally started riding trails with me. What is everyone using for flat pedal shoes? I'm not to keen on buying him expensive shoes every 6 months so I'm open to any and all ideas.

Kids flat pedal shoes
We wear whatever hiking shoes the kids have at the time. My daughter rides old school (small) spike cages. We’ve got some plastic cheap ones on my son’s bike as he doesn’t get too aggressive and he stays on the plastic pins fine.
Skate shoes will work fine. The waffle pattern on Vans works especially well with flat pedals. I think you can find Vans in Winners and outlet stores - you don't have to pay full price at the skate stores.
Yeah, both my kids are on like their 3rd pair of Vans. Perfect shoe. Days they go out in other footwear they slip pedals.
Plus it's hilarious seeing the patterns they choose after letting them loose in the Vans store.

Vans on the kids here too. Seem to be appropriate for biking, scootering, sneaking up on people with nerf guns, meeting general durability requirements, weddings, hiking, etc.
super discount ones are the best because of the totally ludicrous patterns that tend to go on sale (like what Hepcat said).
Vans or DC (high tops are good for ankle support and offer some padding). We get them from "The Shoe Company" and they last.
Vans are fine, the only thing being the soft toe box; more vulnerable. Otherwise some Freeriders or basic RideConcepts (that's what my son has been using) are great. Find what's on sale and fits.
After 2 freeriders next shoes for my 7yo are RCs. They protect much better than vans. He uses them for riding scooter as well. Much better durability than adult five tens somehow. They are always on sale somewhere, $40-60 range
i just scour Facebook for used 5.10s for riding. then pass them on to the next family for what i paid for my time using them. Its sad now that my daughter had bigger feet than my wife and i have to buy 'new'.
