Importing a Canyon bike from Washington. Cost effective?

As far as I know, Canyon do not have a Canadian distributor or deliver direct from Germany but they do have a US operation.

So I can get a bike mailed to Blaine or Point Roberts ($3699 + $89 delivery) plus WA sales tax @8.5% = $4109 USD/$5454 CAD.

Any idea how much import duty and/or sales tax/anything else I'd have to pay?

I believe I can't request a refund of the WA sales tax. I think there is a 13% import tariff on complete bikes but not sure whether GST/PST is on top of that, or whether anything can be offset against WA sales tax!

I've imported a total of 1 bikes from the US and it went like this:

Price of bike

+ WA state sales tax

+ 5% GST at the border

Was that fairly recently?

(Apparently it was possible to claim a refund of WA sales tax up until July...

Good point about ForX.

New bike.

I used a credit card that gives a USD exchange at Visa's posted rate (no markup), saved 2% from the PayPal posted rate.

This was April 2013, so it was actually HST not GST (had I waited three months, I would have saved some Canadian taxes). I did not go through the process to claim US sales tax.

Sounds like a huge headache.

Not sure what model/ build you are looking to buy, but 5-6 k will get you a pretty nice bike here locally at the shops. They start blowing their 2019 stock out late fall.

Agreed! Just musing really...

There were rumours that Velofix were going to import them (like in US) and I was wondering whether Canyons price advantage would be maintained...

If anyone knows of a nice carbon road race bike with full Ultegra Di2 groupset and discs in 58 or 60 cm frame sizes going cheap, let me know! ;-)

Due to the cost of my G16 frame it was initially hit with GST+PST+Duty as I suspect CBSA thought it was a complete.

Should be clearance pricing on Giant bikes now. Although it’s late enough selection is limited.  Trek? Specialized? Nor I?

I also only paid 5% on an imported bike, but it was easy to roll the dice because it was like $300.

My friend bought a used Strive from the states a few years back. The little travel adjuster thingy in the rocker broke so he needed a new unit. Canyon wouldn't ship the little piece to canada so he had it shipped to his father in law in Japan and he had to ship it to him in Canada. Took months, is it really worth it?
