If you suspect your Fox fork is creaking, is it a bad thing?

A new crown-stanchion assembly is about $200 and would be free install with your service.

Maybe I could have them put some thru-axle lowers on too.

Oh wait.

Wrong. Always.

Give up. Like a rattly car, put some headphones in and forget about the noise!

I don't throw out the creaky mattress when I'm banging the ball and chain.

my 2010 Fox F29 developed a very loud cracking noise which sounded to me it was the crown/steerer interface. i turned my bike upside down and dropped some penetrating oil in between the crown and steerer and let it sit overnight, and it went away. not really sure if that is really the right fix, but it worked

That's my attitude with my old Lyrik. Assuming that's the issue. I spend too much time finding creaks on customers bikes to give a toss about my own! All points of contact are clean, bolts torqued to spec blah blah blah. If I ever remember I might try the thin threadlock trick though.

People want weight weenie bikes that they can hang on a scale, take photos of and post pics on the net, hence you get weedy crowns and 5ml of oil in the fork ;)

I have a 2011 36 float and it would creak while riding and when I twisted the bars and held the front wheel with my legs. I used blue lock-tite per another thread I found on NSMB. I let it sit overnight and initially it still creaked but after a couple days its been quiet and this was mid-summer when I "fixed" it. I spoke with Fox before the fix and although it was out of warranty they said it would probably be covered anyhow (probably because they know its an issue).

Also my understanding of the problem (at least in my case) is that the nuts on top of the crown are not tightened down enough from the factory and if caught early enough it can be corrected. I also was told they have since increased the torque spec…………

Good luck

developed the dreaded "fox crackling" on my 8 month old Fox 32 Evo forks (used on 29'er XC bike for light riding)

sent them to Mojo (Fox UK) for inspection, they replaced the CSU free of charge including a full service for free

spoke to a tech at Mojo, had an interesting conversation, I had always assumed it the was the interface between crown and steerer causing the cracking / creaking

I had seen this on previous pairs of 32 forks and even 36 forks I have owned and my customers have owned

not so he said, its the interface between fork stanchions and crown. Fox use a very light weight crown on the 32 and a relatively light weight crown on the 36 as customers demand light weight equipment.

the stanchions are press fitted into the crown, in their factory with a light coat of grease, he said the tolerance range for fitting is narrow and the machine rejects a surprising number of fitments if the crown has deformed too far during stanchion fitting. he mentioned that the torque of the top caps on the fork is critical, and some riders who do home servicing do not set the torque properly which can accelerate this issue

he said during normal use, regular cleaning with products like Muc-Off and exposure to salty winter roads causes the grease to leach away from this interface (as the surface coating on the fork legs is porous) and the forks will develop this noise

he said its something Fox have noticed more in the UK where riders are using their bikes 12 months a year in wet conditions (meaning lots of cleaning) and also where local authorities are very "enthusiastic" about dumping tonnes of salt onto the road during icy weather!

he said its not a structural issue in terms of safety, but agreed its annoying, it cannot be rectified by refitting the stanchions as its a "one shot" fitting process in their factory, and the only solution is a new CSU which they cover under warranty during the 1st year

once out of warranty though?? kinda expensive…

Or is it just kind of irritating? They don't go and break or anything do they? Be a shitty time for a faceplant me thinks.

Are the 34 and 36 mm stanchion Fox forks prone to this creaking phenomenon too?

My 2012 Fox Float 34 has developed a creak (stanchion/CSU interface), called Fox last month for an RA and they were :dizzy: about hearing a 34 creak. It a first for them they said (yeah right) and gave me an RA. I'll be sending it in a few weeks when the season ends here in the Midwest. Not too worried about it really, since the warranty on the CSU is 2 years. When I first heard it, yeah, I'll admit I was pissed, especially after paying $899 for the thing, even went as far as buying a 2012 RS Revelation RCT3 140 to try on my bike (and selling the 34) but it didn't even come in close to what I expected from a long-travel 29er fork. Sold the Revelation, made a few bucks, which in turn will cover the shipping back of the 34 to Fox lol. Also owned a Fox Talas 34 but not long enough for it to develop a creak.

Seems my 3rd 36 has developed this issue. Frustrating.

Pretty sure it's a 2013. Mine's a 20mm axle

I'm on my 3rd CSU/Stanchion set. (been replaced twice). I'm hesitant to hand my fork over again and wait for another replacement. I've been riding this one fairly sparingly since about Christmas. Maybe a 2 hour ride once/week (if lucky) since then? Had a 2nd kid. Time is short.

Time for dealing with warranty issues is even shorter.

By any standard, this fork is being exposed to pretty "light duty" use. I don't get why I'm having so many issues. I hose my bike down sparingly, I keep it indoors in my nice toasty basement, I speak to it in dulcet tones. I just don't get it.

Fox has it sorted out from 2015 onwards, very limited creak issues if any .
I've been riding 2 different sets of 2015 (36 RC2 Fit) with nothing but grins and satisfaction.

Just got me a 2016 Fit4 34 for my little 5010, cant wait to try it tomorrow.

2014 and under are suspect

I've now had a creaky Fox, Marzo, Rockshox, and Manitou. All of different travel and stanction width.

It's not a Fox thing, it's single crown fork thing. And for some reason, there isn't an engineer around who can solve it…..
