How much rise?

Need some advice

I am looking to add some rise to my bars.   I am currently on some cutlass bars with a 17 mm rise.  I find that on some fast techy straight away sections with drops like oilcan or on the one section of executioner near the bottom, I am pitched more forward than I like.  Hoping to counteract this with adding more rise but not sure how much.  Bars are not cheap so I want to get it right the first time.  I like the oneup bars but they only come in 20 an 35mm rise.  Is 35mm too much of a jump? Suggestions and advice please.

I've got 35mm, 50mm and 80mm rise bars on my various MTBs. Really just depending how short the dang headtubes/steerers are. I know where I want my bars now and I just buy the rise I need to get there. That perfect place has changed over the years so I can't tell you what to do, but for me 35mm rise from 17mm rise is not a crazy huge change. You can always adjust the effective bar height with spacers above/below the stem assuming you can a bit of room there to maneuver.

What’s your spacer situation? Can you play with spacers, at least temporarily, to get an idea of what feels good?

I don’t think you’ll notice much difference between 17 mm and 20 mm, so I’d go 35 mm, provided you have some spacers available to lower the new bars if you find them too high.

Renthal makes a few 30mm rise bars. This might be a good compromise.

Don't forget that wider bars need to be run a little higher, as a wider hand position pulls your torso down. 

Second the opinion about playing with spacers. I'd make adjustments in 5mm increments if you can. I find 10mm to be a pretty big change in feel. I run most of the time a fairly high setup 38mm rise Deity Blacklabel bars with 10mm under them and 10mm over on an XL Patrol (I'm 6'2").  I swap a spacer and go 5mm lower when I'm doing a high-country ride with lots of tech climbs and no boosty moves, helps keep the front down, but I don't like that setup for my everyday rowdy riding with lots of xcdh and mostly non-tech climbs.

Switched over to Renthal bahs a few years back. 30 and 20mm rise in both cahbin and alloy flavours.  I enjoy the higher rise compared to the lower.

Min is 30mm for me , and add a stem with some rise as well. Oh plus I run a few spacer under for adjustment if needed.

Running carbon 31.6mm Renthal 40mm rise with a 6deg Apex stem.

You ok with the One Up sweep? If you're used to bars with more sweep like Race Face, Deity etc they feel very straight.

The chromag bar I am running is 5 back 8 sweep so it is exactly what the same as the One Up.

I do have some spacers on the underneath but don’t want to mess around with that too much as it will change my reach.

Made a jump from 20 to 40 this year along with a bit extra sweep to address some wrist pain. I say make a big change to really see how it feels. 

Worth going with a heavy cheap bar or two before investing in a high end offering  

I keep all my old bars to use them as mules for fit.

Got a new bike built and feeling like I need a bit more rise. 40 with 10mm in spacers feels like a good height but I want to maintain stock reach as much as possible. I think 50 with a 3nm spacer will be good for most riding. 

Currently testing with a Nukeproof with 40 and 9’ sweep which really made a difference to wrist pain and hand numbness last year. 

Looking for something 50mm but ideally with a 9 or 10’ sweep and 780-800mm. 

I’ve looked at the Deity Highside but it’s 760 (I think this would be ok but it’s nice to have the option to cut down) but I’m worried it may be too jump focused and thus too stiff. 

FU50 is nice but the 8’ sweep. Same with the Title 50mm. But both are 800. 

Then there is the Enve M9 at 50 but again it’s 8’. 

What else is out there that I am missing?

I got a nukeproof horizon bar before Xmas. Its not quite as tall as you want - 38mm. It has a 9deg backsweep and only cost me about 100$ or so. So far I'm pretty happy with it.

So that’s what I got now. Last gen horizon and I totally agree, great bar. It’s why I want 9’ sweep or more and higher rise. Was originally going to order a new one for the new bike but I’m feeling I want that higher rise so I can reduce spacers.
