How many chain rings are you running on your main mountain bike?

What the heck does that mean?

I think it means that there are still local trails/conditions that require lower gearing and are much, much harder if you are just trying to grind it out, rather than spinning.

Tried a 111 for first time on a couple rides this weekend and could not climb what I usually climb with my usual 29
I am sure part of it was I wasn't used to it but seemed like one had to be really giving it a lot more and if one stood for more power then I spun out

This has zero to do with 1x11 vs. 2x9. It may be that the chain ring size offered different ratios than your bike, or it may have just been in your head

My 28-42 granny gear is identical to a 24-36 granny gear, the jump between gears is identical to a 10spd setup right down until the final cog, and my top gear is a 28-10, which is about the same as a 31x11 - this is where 100% of my compromise occurred, but I've yet to want another gear - I just spin quickly if it's real fast.

Pretty sure it was not in my head!! But i should have looked at ring sizes as i have no idea how close they came to my normal setup…will look in future when i try one again so i know for comparisons, thanks.

i actually have 1x on all my bikes now but voted 2x just to spite morgman.

Just dont get enough climbing miles in to hack it with a single ring. Climbing up Old Buck, just would never be able to do it without my granny ring.

Jeez, I don't know. Having a 42 tooth on the back with a 30t narrow wide on the front on a 29er, the climbing isn't that difficult. It feels like it's the equivalent of my favorite climbing gear on my 26er 22x30 (I rarely felt the need to drop to 22x34, in fact that gearing is so low traction becomes an issue.)

Now not having higher than 30 x 11 I can see as a problem for some people when they are on something fast and wide-open (like a road haha.)

I ride Burke with a 1x10 (32 x 36) and rarely in 1st. 1x11 would be cheating.
