How many chain rings are you running on your main mountain bike?

So if I read that correctly the 30-42t ratio is the same as a 24-36t granny. Sweetaz, just what I was looking for on those grunt climbs.

Actually its not quite the same because that chart was only using 1 decimal place. Using the gear inch chart you can see that a 28x42 is the same as a 24x36.

I don't have enough money to be involved in this marketing circle-jerk, so I'll stick with a 1x10 non-clutch system for the time being.

Why slag free swag?

ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.

I'm still 1x10 just without a 17t and with a 42t out back…..only cost $100. Not a bad investment considering I dealt with 30-36 for a year and liked it 90% of the time.

I've been on 32T 11-36 for 3yrs now including a 29er.

There are a few climbs that I haven't been able to do, but becoming a better rider would solve those issues. Or some new über part…

It's more about doing those climbs without blowing yourself up for the rest of the ride. Or allowing yourself to relax a bit on a climb. Not all of us are Kindree or Hestler;)

That über part is called a front derailleur.

I'm 1x10 and loving it except for some of the road commute to the trails is a bit irritating. Gives me more time to wink at the chicks tho.

Wrong. Always.

boom.

We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

I predict 2016 will be the year of the retro front derailleur and triple rings.

the death of the front derailleur has been greatly exaggerated

This.

I know someone that reads but doesn't post any more is waiting for me to drop this one.

Rode Fromme early Sunday morning. Five riders, one with 2x10, three with 1x10 and one on 1x11. The only rider to clean the techiest sections of the climbs was the rider on 2x10.

In a garage session i sat alone as the only 26 inch wheeled, 2x10, aluminum bike that came stock with a roller and bash ring 2.3 [HTML_REMOVED] rear 2.2 tires. The full carbon, mid sized wheel bikes, have all been updated with 1x10 or 1x11 and tubless, or came stock with tubeless. The price point difference with all the mods is around 2grand between my relic and the new breed technology bikes. All bikes would be sold under the all mountain banner, or at least trail bike. No xc race bikes in the pack. All bikes had dropper posts.
As each one of us took our bikes off the work stand the weight in on the park tools scale followed. 1-3lbs was the difference and yes, my antique was the lightest. This visibly angered 2 of the 3 heavier riders. The one pounder was indifferent.
One day i will test ride the mid size wheel bikes to see if the climbing ( or descending?) is that superior to my ancient, unproven junk. Then make the decision if i would like to upgrade….or will i have a choice? Tires? Wheels? Alum? Front derailerss? Are these all gonna be extinct? Should they be? :deadhorse: i know i know. I am all for improvements to our gear. im not a fan of loss of choice or preference. Im not a racer, and i have never had a front derailer completely fail on me. I luv my dropper post.

That's pretty conclusive…

At least for me the only barrier to climbing is my fitness and technique… the drivetrain is the least of my worries. If I am fit I can climb anything in 1x10 that I ever could in 3 or 2x10.

The one thing I really miss about 2X10 is the psychological moment, when you admit defeat and drop into the 24 knowing that it is highly unlikely you are ever going to step it back up to the 36/38 for anymore climbs that day.

That drop down - is an honest moment.
