How low is too low?

I rode the 2015 Reign in Moab and it was amazing, but I was dragging pedals all over the place.

I'm seriously considering getting one, but worried about extreme lowness for shore riding. For example, would I hang up the chainring on that skinny-to-rock-roll on Expresso? Would I have to lift the back wheel like dropping into a half-pipe at the skatepark? Would the rooty climbs on baden-powell be even remotely possible without ratchet-pedaling?

Is it all worth it for the cornering?

How low can y'all go?

Btw, Giant doesn't list the bb height. Closest measurement I've found is "sub 340mm"

I note the new hustler 27.5 is 330mm

So, approved for exxxxxxxtreme shore use?

I ride an Enduro 29er with a stated BB height of 351. With 175mm cranks I connect with rocks and stuff often enough that my cranks and pedals are pretty beat up. But I've never had roll-in clearance issues. I make that rock on Espresso without issue - never even considered the possibility of not making it.

My Slash has 350mm BB height and I don't think I've ever hit it on anything while running a 30t front ring, Espresso smooth included. I have 175mm cranks and I pedal strike once every couple of rides if I pedal through rough stuff (which I do quite often).

it might take you some adjustment, but personally i think its worth it to get a nice low bb number

i rode a stumpjumper 650b evo for a few months on the shore earlier this year - bb height is 327mm, lower than anything in its class by quite a bit. it took a few rides to adjust to, but eventually pedal strikes weren't much of an issue and i found it climbed quite well. the bash ring (probably ~38/40 tooth ring equivalent) did get hung up on stuff, but it would probably have been fine with a 30/32 tooth ring

My Xprezo Adhoc BB is around 335ish and it definitely took some adjustment in my riding to prevent pedal strikes… I ended up changing from 175 to 170 cranks. The lower BB makes a really a big difference in bike handling. Its worth it.

^^ agreed, geometry is paramount and you just adjust your pedal stroke. I have a bb around 330 and I wouldn't have it any other way. 175s too.

Was riding the new expresso for the first time this week. Wow did that trail change… low bb for sure one that. I think it depends on what you do and what you want from your bike. There is no one answer. Dirt jump, new school berm trails lower bb for sure. Really rocky trails with lots of pedaling, specially up hill pedaling, higher bb.

Agreed. My Spartan is 337mm (with 165mm travel) and the thing just rails. I also run 170mm cranks.
