I challenged my kid for this academic school year: report card at the end of the year (over here mid July 2025) needs to show two As, and four Bs, and no grade worse than C ....and he gets a set of Hope V4 brakes in the color of his choice, without the rotors. At the moment he is all fired up and excited.

That is awesome. I hope your kid gets the brakes.

Thanks, man....I do so as well. Bummer that we did not write the whole thing down and signed it. He thinks that it was never about grades worse than C...I can not really remember. Which might be good for him, tho.

Did you see this? Hope V4 stomped even Truckstuff in the lab.

Edit: Also stomped Trickstuff, probably not as impressive.

That is a great write up. Thanks for sharing. I must read it now. LoL

In the hopes of keeping things simple and easy parts availably I went with Maven Silver Brakes. See how it goes.

Sram parts availability (besides regular wear items) has been a PITA in the past. Is this not an issue anymore?

Edit: It looks like most online retailers carry a bunch of Maven parts, including seal/piston kits, caliper bodies, caliper bolts, Mast cylinder seal kits, lever kits, etc which is nice to see.

So the choice is between two very expensive brakes, one that’s demonstrated in a very limited amount of time to be fussy and unreliable and is made by a company notorious for unreliable brakes, while the other is proven over a period of years to be reliable, well built and serviceable.

Do I have this right?

I feel like I’m on crazy pills whenever people talk about going SRAM for good brakes.

You are correct. I found a brand new take off pair for a great price and I just went for it. I have had great luck with SRAM brakes, these Mavins are actually the first brakes to give me troubles. They HAD the common wondering bite point issue. But after a good bleed and a few very rough piston message's they are feeling great.

I thought I'd dredge this a little having just put T4V4s (220/203) on a full fat ebike that also has a kid's seat and 16kg kid on it a lot of the time.

I'm super impressed with the Hopes. I need to do a bit of a piston massage to get them perfect, but even putting them on in a hurry in order to pick up the kid from kindergarten, they bled up fast and easy, immediate power, no faff. The fact Hope ship brakes with multiple sets of pads is a nice touch.

The modulation is very good. I can't compare direct to Mavens, but I think they feel better than the Radics I have on another bike. Slightly longer throw, but much more lever feel.

I may be wrong, but the hope build quality is so much nicer that sram and I expect them to prove much more reliable that the usual sram shitshow of unpredictability and 'we're never seen that before' faff.

It may be worth adding that both the Radic and Hope bikes were using TRP DHR evos, which I found to be really shit. Even getting them super cheap I couldn't justify keeping them. Power was average at best, I had a first set where pads were contaminated with pad back plate paint which ruined rotors, and I swear the 2.3mm rotors mine came with were just never very good. I also found it really annoying they have designed a brake that uses shimano mineral oil, pads, and hoses, but not a shimano bleed bucket thread - their own one is forever out of stock. I think if you got a set suepr cheap and could run them with a different brand rotor and pad (maybe saint lines) they'd be ok.

I have used every Hope brake since 1998 starting with the C2 and refuse to anything but Hope on brakes.  Their hubs are another matter entirely (with front hub bearings going in about a year) but the brakes are the best, period.  Easy to work on, service and with all stainless parts never lacking in quality.  IMHO there is no compare.

Had the C2’s on my bikes. Despite their age in 2013 still ran well. Dang now have me thinking of maybe going Hope brakes again in future.
