Hey math geeks, engineers, and bike nerds, answer me THIS!

OK, so I've got a 32 hole rim on the front of my bike and the corresponding number of spokes laced to said rim.

Given that there are 32 spokes spread out evenly around the circle, there are also 32 holes between said spokes (I counted them to confirm) so assuming all things are equal, with a spin of the wheel there'd be a 1 in 32 chance, or 3.125% chance of stopping at any given gap.

Given this probability, why is it that when I hang my bike on the Whistler Lifts the hook ends up resting on the valve 60% of the time?!?!?!?

and your wheel is imbalanced.

Because rims are welded opposite the valve, hence the part opposite the valve (where it's welded) is heavier, making it roll to the bottom.

Cause when you did your tubeless setup the valve stem was up and now there's a big wad of sealant opposite the valve?

The issue is persistant in tubed and tubeless wheels, and the rim weld theory would only hold water if the wheel was left to settle. It's still spinning when I place it on the hook, so the weighting of the wheel wouldn't come into play much.

I'm starting to think that 'magic' is the only viable explanation.

Valve stem?

its fairly common sense, when you loft that front wheel up to put it up on the hook, hold the bars and lock the brakes when the valve stem is not anywhere near the top of the wheel, use the bars, while holding front brake, and a nudge on your seat from your thigh, to lift the wheel onto the hook, I have been doing this for a looonnngg time and never once have I hit the valve stem and caused a flat.

the way some people struggle with that hook makes me laugh (on the inside cause that would be rude to laugh right at them), hands on frame and fork like it's a North Shore Rack, or one hand on the bar and another at the seat, sooo many different styles, but to each there own I guess. Just get a lifty to do it for you and you can spooge a new tube from the mountain if they screw up….

I've wrestled with this for years. But not with the bike wheel I dont give a shit about that.
