Having some trouble changing brake pads… avid juicy 3's, can't get the pistons pushed back in. Any tips? i've been working on this for an hour. first time changing pads with this setup, used to the old Hayes Mags.

been trying that for some time now… they just aren't pushing back enough to fit in the pads… let alone the gap where the rotor will go. also, the piston are starting to 'chip' from my efforts and i don't want to wreck 'em.

put the old pads back in and stick a wide blade flat screwdriver between them and work the pistons back in. If that doesn't work the pistons may be seized, try dripping a bit of brake fluid around the edges to lubricate (make sure to clean up after with water before putting new pads in)

^ This. I've also had success using a slim profile crescent wrench (not sure of the size - 10mm 15mm?)… The head was the right size to cover the piston head nicely and I was able to apply nice even pressure to work the heads back in… But really a wide blade flat screw driver while the old pads are still in is the easiest method.

Juicy 3's don't have any kind of contact adjustment do they? If so that'll need to be wound out.

Otherwise, your lines might be a little pressurized? If so letting a bit of fluid out at the lever while pushing them in might be the ticket.

disclaimer: While I work on my own bike I'm by no means a mechanic. proceed at your own risk :P

lol another hour and no luck. Hayes were SO much easier to change pads - you could just walk back the pistons. I have no extra brake fluid to lubricate the pistons, and any messing with fluid levels will result in a bleed / bike shop visit for sure. I would have just taken them to the shop, but 3 NS Bikeshops were too busy to do this for me today. :(

needle nose plyer works too, just push the center of piston with it only or wrench works just don't damage the piston

i've done this before with troublesome pads, it works fine as a last resort.

can't get the pistons pushed back in.

10mm box wrench. If that doesnt work try releasing a couple drops of fluid.
