Headset gurus- Help wanted

I just purchased a new frame that has a tapered 44mm top and 56mm bottom head tube (hooray!). My current setup is a straight 1.5" steerer tube fork which at this point is on the verge of extinction with the likes of 26" wheels..haha

In order to make my fork fit my new frame, I need an external cup 44mm top. The only headset I've seen that fits this criteria is the Nukeproof Warhead 44EEOS. The only problem is that the only place that I've seen carry it (CRC) is out of stock until at least mid December.

Does anyone know of any other headset manufacturer that makes a 44mm external cup top for straight 1.5" steerer tubes?

Or does anyone have a Nukeproof Warhead 44EEOS that they are willing to part with?

you could probably bodge it out of a lower EC44 headset by cane creek. getting all the parts might be tough, but it should be possible.

ya like this. Not sure what you'd use for the race ring though since the crown race on top would be a little loose on the steerer. Might be OK. I've used worse.

you should be able to track down a spare compression ring assy, but availability might be as bad as the nukeproof unit.

You could try just phoning Cane Creek. I did it when I was dealing with an OS2 headache, and they were super helpful. They gave me the part #, picked it up at the LBS, slapped it in, and off I went.

In theory it's a 44mm external tapered lower cup, flipped upside down, with a normal 1.5 top bearing, compression ring, and top cap. Nukeproof looks to be making this as a kit, but you might be able to mix and match at your local bike shop ("obsolete" 1.5 upper stuff should be hiding in drawers unused…)

I ran one on my Stylus for a while. I'll check my parts bin, I'm pretty sure it's still there somewhere.

I just emailed them with my situation. I'll update this thread when I get a response.

Yep I've still got it. You just want the top right? It's used but still in good shape. PM me your phone number and I'll text a couple of pics if you want.

CRC has Cane Creek mix n match options available.

Without looking at the conversion, I'd say you'd have a tapered headtube frame with a 1.5 fork. WHich means you either need a tapered 1.125 to 1.5 steer tube pressed in or a new fork which would probably be cheaper.

No dice. Contacted Cane Creek, but they said they didn't carry anything that would work.

Cane Creek probably also isn't going to advertise that they can make Franken headsets from their parts bin.

Interesting, but I don't see one that is a 44mm top for a 1.5" steerer tube?

No problem, I know from experience what a pain it can be to find a 44mm top that can handle a 1.5" steerer tube. They exist, but getting one into your hands can be a trial. Just wish the shipping had been a little more prompt, unfortunately the family having the plague for a couple of weeks slowed things down.
